Scrolling random Japanese sites, so far it seems that it is a typical GuP product in that a rather bland plot is pulled through by superior execution.

What seems to have happened is that all we ever got to see is the Exhibition, and the meat is the MEXT going back on its word and the school is being shut down. They are actually chased out of the school and we are supposed to see some interesting scenes of them while they were forced to refuge in a former land school.

I can really see why some viewers were unhappy with this development. It is simply NOT a good idea to recook issues like this, and even considering the compression of a movie, this is just not very plausible!

Anyway, a deal was eventually cut where if they win against a 30-tank university team (that's all those characters whose affiliations have not been announced), this time the board will keep its promises (according to some viewers, Shiho FINALLY does something decent in this show and helped cut this deal.

Cue everyone lining up to join Oarai. Meh. The execution was supposedly brilliant and impressed most, but some did think the tank battles have been pushed too far to the unrealistic edge this time.

In any case, it definitely sounds like something that would sink or swim based on detailed execution only.

Well, I always thought Pepperoni and Anchovy ain't that bad. If anything, I was a bit disappointed at Carpaccio last round but if she is the calm one this time I'm not objecting.

Basically, the movie is in the "Type-89" dilemma. The only things you can use the Type 89 for are recce and acrobatics. It seems they went for both in the film.

- The last showdown is between Miho (Panzer IV) and Maho (Tiger1) vs. Alice (Centurion). It is definitely on par with the final battle of the TV series.

A very stereotypical GuP ending, but I must wonder at the University Team. The fact the battle ended in basically mutual annihilation though the University Team had the superior tanks and the cohesive,, practiced team suggests that when all is said and done, they are overall at best equal in individual abilities to the best High School Students. The future of Senshado might not be looking so bright

- Maho has a Panzer II at home and, according to Miho's flashback, Maho used to take her sister out for drive with her Panzer II. The loli Maho diving Panzer II is the cutest thing of the whole movie.

- Thanks to the United High Schools Team, you can see the members of other teams dressed up in the Ooarai school uniform, though they later change to their usual ones.[/quote]

On other comments, one negative note I have to make on this film from what I'm hearing so far, is that they've broken away from the "No Real Bad People in GuP" rule.

Sure, Erika was a bit snotty. Katyusha is a bit bratty and Alisa used her radio intercepting device. But they aren't bad, just a bit haughty in their own way. Even Shiho is doing what she thinks best for the Nishizumi school and the show makes it 200% plain her doctrines are well in-line with the in world zeitgeist if not ours.

Now, however, this film seems (from what I'm hearing) to make the Campus ships Bureau into a bunch of lying maggots who broke a deal they never had to make. They apparently topped it off by, after agreeing to terms that are utterly favorable to them, nevertheless somehow finding money to provide the University All-Stars Team with a frigging 60cm mortar.

And in de facto allying with this farce, the University All-Stars Team also seem to sully their own honor. Which is not good because apparently they are not very well characterized and they are already in fact a bunch of university students bullying kids several years their junior.

I'm not sure I like this development no matter how good the execution might be...

Hopefully the comments inside are not too rough. I'm indeed feeling the stress from not being able to see the darn thing for myself.

The above says, they added an autoloader for a 500mm+ piece - well beyond what has been achieved in WWII even for a naval gun.

And given the fact it is a film and they are playing it up as a threat, they are probably not keeping even remotely to at best 5 minutes / shot, so it is nowhere close to equivalent capability.

If we assume what they said before this show holds, it is a complete cheat probably authorized by the male chairman of the Japanese Senshado Federation (in link).

This must be one of the more anti-masculine pieces made in recent history. Males are bad. That's why they can't drive tanks. Get it, FanFiction.Net writers?

I can see that there will be the "friendly interactions" that you mention. Though it is mentioned in the reviews that the three "company commanders" of the university team isn't very fleshed out, so all the thing likely be with Alice.

Personally, I think MEXT is the big bad here (though it is possible they are being arm-twisted themselves by the Finance Ministry but if that's so they just never had to promise anything).

I suppose the male Senshado League chairman probably is doing his MEXT friend a "favor" by approving that Karl Gerat without being "in the plan". And as for the university students, they are probably just following "orders".

Still, I'm left with the brutal reality that:

1) for a picked university team, they just aren't very good if overall they can only effectively tie with a picked HS team (both sides were mutually annihilated) even with overall better tanks.

2) however superficially nice, they have accepted a mission that's essentially clubbing baby seals and as far as I can see show no guilt for it. Remember, they originally intended to attack 30:8. Oh, OK, people have attacked Oarai at these odds before without feeling too much guilt but they have the added thing they are university students.

3) They accepted and used the Karl Gerat (read above for why that's a problem) and the Centurion and T28 are though legal, along the same lines. Even if they were forced into the mission or they believed this is only a friendly match with no real consequences or whatever, one would think if they had the slightest pride in themselves as top university players they won't have resorted to those legally iffy, newly acquired contraptions just to gain an edge. You were not supposed to think better of Kuromorimine when they brought in a Maus, and this is worse.

For this reason based on what I can read about these people my first impressions of them are going really dark.

Rather than conspiracy theories or not, it is more like the team this time made a few unfortunate big decisions without thinking hard enough about their consequences. I mean, they can even redo the Close School thing if they want. But they should have added at least some kind of twist to it. For example, they could have made it so some other school now had to die and they are biting back. OR they can give a clearly defined new justification. For example, the Oarai schoolship can fail an inspection. Or it can develop a sudden, massive failure that drastically ups the cost of keeping it.

At least have a pretext. But no, they just choose the cheapest route of the Direct Reverse, and they even rush the execution to an implausible extent. And to finish it off, they sent a Gerat, and colluded with the male JSF chairman to get it all signed off.

It makes the executor of such concepts a bad guy, and anyone on his side cannot fully escape his taint. I don't think this is deliberate conspiracy,, just the stacking up of multiple decisions that formed an unfortunate line.

OK, some preliminary comments. Some other sources gave the All-Stars Chaffees as well, but I don't see them here. Oh well.

Anyway, Alice gets allocated 11 tanks of 29 (she didn't get the last tank).

I suppose the idea was to show us how utterly l33t Alice was, but this is not a good move. I know they have to give her more than the average, but allocating over a third to her is excessive. It inevitably shafts the rest of the team and in fact, other reviews I've read of the movie suggest that after Alice gets in her encirclement, which was broken by Rabbit Team before it could take real effect, the fight actually progressed in favor of the High School Team and then Alice decides to "show her stuff".

This decision also shafts *Alice* because instead of actually *commanding* like she's supposed to, apparently she placed most of her efforts into being a lone fighter. While such weaknesses are not unique to Alice (Miho and Maho are really also better single-tank fighters than commanders) ... Alice, wouldn't it be nice if you were different?

Well, if so, why do you bother replying? I'm making it pretty clear that I hadn't watched it and am fairly desperate to do so.

For all that, while we are waiting, information is already starting to come out. Information concerning the basic structure of the movie. Info that's not necessarily encouraging, to be honest, but doesn't look like it'll change just because I watched the movie.

Further, I feel it might be a good time-filler to debate the film before watching it, and seeing if opinions change after watching it.

It is my experience that critical reviews are those that really give you an idea of what to expect. For example, some have complained the tank battle scenes are too long. Will I agree when I see it? I don't know, but I am warned. A review that says "Kewl! Nice explosions! Cool moving tanks! I was moved to tears! [Reference to Film I didn't watch]" just isn't as informative.

Girls und Panzer did not, BTW, get so beloved only because of battles and it is not necessarily true that a "twist" will reduce the number of minutes diverted to tanks.

For example, we can go with the news being the big Oarai ship having grounded and bruised itself and not having the extra money for repairs, so everyone gets evaced out. MEXT sees its pretext ... that would hardly have taken anything at all

And certainly it would have wasted 0 minutes to just make the Chairman of the JSF a woman as people might expect and put in something less offensive than the Karl-Gerat.

And even if we have to say cut 5 minutes out of the battles ... if no one told you you would barely notice but it'll probably make the film significantly more ... universally satisfying. And that's what such films should be ... universally satisfying. For such films, the moment a significant portion of the population, without even a rewatch, already question the premise is NOT a great start especially when it is easily avoided.
