Amazon's Lord of the Rings Show Is About the Return of Sauron

"Through scraps of information and even a bit of cartography, we’ve long been able to
get a general gist of what Amazon’s massive new Lord of the Rings series is going to be
about. But now the company has revealed the first official story details for the series,
confirming what we’ve long expected: the prequel will tackle the rise of Middle-earth’s
greatest evil.

Confirmed via a synopsis provided to TheOneRing.net, Amazon Studios revealed that the
series—currently filming in New Zealand with a cast that seems about as large as the
population of a small country on top of that—is indeed set in the Second Age,
“thousands” of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The
show will concern itself with characters “both familiar and new” as they reckon with the
fact that the Dark Lord Sauron has returned to cast shadow and flame across Middle-
earth."

So this will likely be primarily set around the time of the sinking of Numenor it seems.

Amazon's Lord of the Rings Series Just Dropped a Surprising Bit of
Season 2 News

"We’ve still got over a year to wait for Amazon’s as-yet untitled, verifiably expensive
Lord of the Rings series chronicling the Second Age of Middle-earth, which won’t grace
our screens until September 2, 2022. But on the heels of news that season one just
wrapped principal photography in New Zealand—a country whose majestic landscapes,
so lovingly showcased in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films, have
become inextricably linked with J.R.R. Tolkien’s tales—comes this announcement:
season two is picking up stakes and shifting to the United Kingdom.

The reason? Convenience with a side of cohesion. “The shift from New Zealand to the
UK aligns with the studio’s strategy of expanding its production footprint and investing in
studio space across the UK, with many of Amazon Studios’ tentpole series and films
already calling the UK home,” according to an Amazon press release, which also quotes
Vernon Sanders, Amazon Studios’ VP and Co-Head of TV, offering thanks to “the people
and the government of New Zealand for their hospitality and dedication and for
providing The Lord of the Rings series with an incredible place to begin this epic journey.”

The press release also notes that season one’s post-production is still underway in New
Zealand and will be through June 2022, with pre-production on season two ramping up
in the UK in early 2022."

They admitted they didnt have the rights for the Silmarilion and Unfinished Tales, they cant remake the movies because of their huge popularity, so they are making fanfiction

Ugh. That's...not good news.

I was kinda looking forward to events such as the Theft of the Silmarils, the Kinslaying at Alqualondë, the story of Túrin Turambar and the Fall of Gondolin, but I guess I was expecting too much.

Now that the good material is off-limits, they'll be strip-mining the parts that Tolkien glossed over or never bothered expounding on, and populating the series with stuff in the vein of that unneeded romance subplot in The Hobbit.

If anything, their hack job have vindicated The Hobbit Trilogy. And Thauriel is a far better Original Character than anyone in this series.

I think "vindicated" is too strong a term. Made it seem more tolerable by comparison, maybe.

Apparently they're gunning for five seasons, all of them already planned out.

Quote:
Premiering September 2, “The Rings of Power” incorporates stories of Elves, Dwarves, Harfoots, and more Middle-earth clans as the famed rings are forged and Sauron’s empire is founded. The series is based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels, with Amazon purchasing the rights to a “50-hour show,” according to co-showrunner JD Payne.

“They knew from the beginning that was the size of the canvas…this was a big story with a clear beginning, middle and end,” Payne told Empire magazine. “There are things in the first season that don’t pay off until Season 5. We even know what our final shot of the last episode is going to be.”

Payne added that the series follows author Tolkien’s wish to “leave behind a mythology that ‘left scope for other minds and hands, wielding the tools of paint, music, and drama,'” as per one of Tolkien’s letters to his publisher.

“It was like Tolkien put some stars in the sky and let us make out the constellations,” Payne said, citing that “The Rings of Power” adapted appendices from Tolkien’s work and expanded upon the footnotes. “We’re doing what Tolkien wanted. As long as we felt like every invention of ours was true to his essence, we knew we were on the right track.”

Fellow showrunner Patrick McKay called “The Rings of Power” the product of being “stewards” to the source material.

“The pressure would drive us insane if we didn’t feel like there was a story here that didn’t come from us. It comes from a bigger place,” McKay said. “We trust those ideas so deeply, because they’re not ours. We’re custodians, at best.”

Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” captures the start of the Second Age and follows the forging of the titular rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. The series stars Charles Edwards, Will Fletcher, Amelie Child-Villiers, and newcomer Beau Cassidy among the ensemble cast.

Balrog and Sauron confirmed.
Visuals look impressive. Plot quality and fidelity to canon material both remain to be seen.

Somehow, More Lord of the Rings Movies Are on the Way

"During an investors’ call earlier today, Warner Bros. announced that it will be
making more Lord of the Rings movies. No details have been released at this
time, but wowie zowie.

What could these possibly be? We’re already getting War of the Rohirrim, a tale
focusing on the famous King of Rohan that Helm's Deep is named for, and while
something closer to home like the idea of a Hobbit adaptation that wasn't
stretched to untenable lengths sounds nice, the final movie in that trilogy is less
than a decade old. That leaves J.R.R. Tolkien's sprawling Middle-earth history
book The Silmarillion, but that’s made up of smaller tales and legends, and isn't
really one interconnected epic. And let's not forget Prime Video's Rings of Power,
which already holds a very weird relationship with Warner Bros.' movies and the
Tolkien estate."

RIP King Théoden and Captain Smith.

Quote:
Actor Bernard Hill, best known for roles in Titanic and Lord of the Rings, has died aged 79.

He played Captain Edward Smith in the 1997 Oscar-winning film and King Théoden in the Lord of the Rings.
His breakout role was in 1982 BBC TV drama Boys from the Blackstuff, where he portrayed Yosser Hughes, a character who struggled - and often failed - to cope with unemployment in Liverpool.
He died early on Sunday morning, his agent Lou Coulson confirmed.
With him at the time were his fiancee Alison and his son Gabriel.
Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd, the actors who played the hobbits Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, paid tribute to their co-star at Comic Con in Liverpool.
Astin began by saying: "We love him. He was intrepid, he was funny, he was gruff, he was irascible, he was beautiful."
Boyd recounted watching the trilogy with Monaghan, saying: "I don't think anyone spoke Tolkien's words as great as Bernard did. He would break my heart. He will be solely missed."
Alan Bleasdale, who wrote Boys from the Blackstuff, said Hill's death was a "great loss and also a great surprise".
"It was an astonishing, mesmeric performance - Bernard gave everything to that and you can see it in all the scenes. He became Yosser Hughes."
He added: "I was desperate to work with him. Everything he did - his whole procedure for working, the manner in which he worked and his performance was everything that you could ever wish for.
"You always felt that Bernard would live forever. He had a great strength, physically and of personality."

Hill, who was from Manchester and lived in Suffolk, was due to return to TV screens in series two of The Responder, a BBC drama starring Martin Freeman, which begins airing on Sunday.
Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, paid tribute to him, saying: "Bernard Hill blazed a trail across the screen, and his long-lasting career filled with iconic and remarkable roles is a testament to his incredible talent."
"From Boys from the Blackstuff, to Wolf Hall, The Responder, and many more, we feel truly honoured to have worked with Bernard at the BBC. Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this sad time."
In Boys from the Blackstuff, Hill drew praise for his gritty portrayal of Yosser Hughes, an intense character who pleaded "Gizza [give us a] job" as he sought work.
That show won a Bafta for best drama series in 1983, and in 2000 it was ranked seventh on a British Film Institute list of the best TV shows ever made.
Yosser Hughes, played by Bernard Hill, was one of the most memorable characters in 1982's Boys From The Blackstuff
Another of Hill's memorable BBC TV performances came in the 2015 drama series Wolf Hall, adapted from Hilary Mantel's book about the court of Henry VIII. Hill portrayed the Duke of Norfolk - an uncle of Anne Boleyn and an enemy of Cardinal Wolsey.

In Peter Jackson's epic trilogy The Lord of the Rings, Hill joined the cast for the second film, 2002's The Two Towers, and returned to the franchise for 2003's The Return Of The King, which picked up 11 Oscars.
Other roles in Hill's decades-long career included the 1976 BBC TV series I, Claudius, an appearance in 1982's Gandhi, Shirley Valentine in 1989, The Scorpion King in 2002 and 2008 Tom Cruise film Valkyrie.
He was meant to be at Comic Con Liverpool on Saturday, but had to cancel at the last minute, the convention said in a post on X. As news of his death broke, the organisers said on the platform they were "heartbroken" at Hill's death, and wished his family a "lot of strength".
Scottish musician Barbara Dickson also paid tribute on X, saying he had been a "really marvellous actor".
She added: "It was a privilege to have crossed paths with him. RIP Benny x."

A new Lord of the Rings film, The Hunt for Gollum, will hit
theaters in 2026

"the company just announced that there are two new Lord of the
Rings films in the works (you can read the full press release here).

The first is tentatively titled Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for
Gollum, and it’s being directed by Andy Serkis — you may
remember him for his landmark performance as Gollum in
Jackson’s prior movies."

"And before The Hunt for Gollum arrives, we’ll see another
intriguing project: an anime-style film called The War of the
Rohirrim. That movie arrives this December and covers events in
Rohan a few hundred years before The Lord of the Rings."
