I've also heard vibes that Hippo Team will also be getting a derp in the first battle, but I hadn't seen it yet. I hope it'd look better than it sounds when I see it. That should in any case be smaller because frankly Hippo has derped in my book before, so even if they derp again I may be able to call it "justified" and save most of the text.

Beyond that I'm still hoping most of the film would be good, so I can write much smaller, more positive things for those minutes.

Lacking some serious context, we're pretty much in the dark right now. To this end, so we can have some solid ground to discuss on, I'm hoping that they make the home release sooner rather than later. From what I gather, the last of the screenings end on December 6 (I will be immensely grateful if someone could verify/refute this). If that's true, then from a marketing perspective, there's absolutely no point in delaying the home releases by six months; assuming their marketing department is worth their salt, I'm hoping that the movie will come out sooner (delaying it will merely result in declining interest and corresponding sales).

Incidentally, I'd love to hear some counterarguments for releasing the film later rather than sooner: unlike a game, which is expected to be reasonably functional at launch, a movie is not hampered by those same limitations. So, if anyone is familiar with the Japanese industry's marketing patterns, I an open to hearing the rationale for why they might choose to hold back

Looks like Oarai tries to shake itself off from Chiha-tan's mistake by using the divide and split urban tactics from their Kuromomine match, only that unfortunately St. Gloriana and Pravda know better. The last part with Rabbit and the IS-2 was definitely them trying to reenact their victory against that Jagdtiger... only that unfortunately, Saki said something completely unrelated to their situation, ouch

So according to it it IS the first 8 minutes of the film. It is an unusual choice, not showing us the very beginning of the match, but there it is.

I would assume this match will show the improvments of the weaker member tactics.

The team that seems fully competent is the Volleyball team. They just have a tank that sunks for most things. They can stunt drive a relatively slow tank in combat, they have guts, and they can hit their targets accurately with that short barreled gun. They just cannot defeat any reasonable tank with those hits.

... but you've just spit into mine right when I'm particularly traumatized at the film-maker's latest nerf of my favorite team.

To vent my frustration, allow me to review every starting team's derps - the newer teams didn't really have time to have that many derps. I'm sorry if some people feel I'm spitting in their holy water, but at least your favorite team hasn't been nerfed yet.

Volleyball Team

Actually, they do have 3.5 derps (which is significant since we only saw 5 matches), though the director gave very favorable rolls to ensure it isn't too noticeable.

Specifically, Ep4 I'll grade as half a derp - it was going well and the miscalculation of the penetration is forgivable at their skill level. Not so much their failure to leave themselves an escape path.

Ep6 was also actually a derp - they burst out. And froze. For nearly 30 seconds. They should have been clipped. The director just insisted they did not and gave them a cool action scene.

So's the Anzio fight - I know you are happy they got a lot of hits. The truth is that they were surrounded (the only reason they aren't dead is that they are CV33s) and the most likely reason they aren't killing the little bleeders is a wrong ammunition choice. So that's actually kind of two derps.

The overall impression I have of Duck Team is that they fit the athlete stereotype. Good reflexes, good hand-eye coordination which translates to their ability to hit even on the move at close range and all those other things that catch your (and many others') eye. They are clever but their good judgment is somewhat lacking - the later battles are such that their good judgment is not as required.

Turtle Team

Well every time Momo shoots it is already kind of a derp, isn't it?

For a derp after Anzu got into the gunner's seat, 1.5 derps for Ep11. They really should have killed the Jagdpanther. Some say they should have tried killing some of the vehicles. I can think of some reasons why not, but overall if I were there I would have shot. so ... 1.5 it is.

Hippo Team

They have about 3-4.

The very decision to paint their tank like that in the first place - even among others it is rather distinctive and their ring is a bit smaller because they should know better. Then they went out and just as you think they get it, they put the flags back up and advance and get killed. That's Derp 1, maybe I should count it as 1.5 derps.

They got two derps in the Anzio OVA. The shooting exercise, which truly went miserably and their decision to charge the Semovente in a dogfight. It looks cool but as a piece of judgment it's derp.

Then there is Erwin in OVA5. The very decision to take the risk to try and inteview the Pravda girls is highly unjustifiable and even among that Erwin just wasn't doing so well.

So ... four derps?

My overall impression of Hippo Team is that they are kind of that reliable but average "executing" team. Their direct shot accuracy is relatively good, but not their ability at longer ranges and their judgment is mediocre. Miho knows all this and along with the fact that it is her firepower vehicle for most of the series she keeps it VERY close to her.

Anglerfish Team

Oh, Anglerfish Team's derps. Actually, her team does well, so these are actually Miho's derps.

Two derps for Ep4. Miho simply mismanaged the entire situation on the hill. She failed to make sure everyone even knows about carbon. She also failed to order a timely retreat when the purpose of her original scheme was lost. The results of that are well known. Derp 1.

Derp 2 is when she went into the town and essentially abdicated her position.

Ep5. Mismanagement of the fire distribution problem. She would have gotten both tanks if she bothered to assign targets.

Ep6. When chased, Miho places Hippo at the back - thus it's firepower is completely wasted. She also fails to support Hana's fire control - I know the literary intent of the scene, but from a Watsonian viewpoint, it's a derp.

Anzio OVA. The shooting exercise, for which Miho is supposed to be trying to get Hippo onto target. She is not. This is even more of a derp since Azusa knows the correct answers!

Her combat formation in battle is also suboptimal, but OK I'll call it a mistake, not quite a derp.

Ep 8. Most people call this the team's derp moment. It is Miho's derp moment. The choice to be aggressive is defensible. However,, what Miho should have done, as the team started to charge to the village, is not to give a weak negation. She should tell them in positive terms what to do, such as to surround the village and then enter it which would at least have avoided the spectre of them being completely surrounded. Heck, if she coordinated their fires, she might actually have hit the T-34/76 flagtank taking a chance every time it pops out to buy time for the rest of its team finalizing its ambush.

Ep 11. Should have stopped to kill the Panzer III. They would probably have gotten it. It is escaping in a straight line within direct shot distance.

Overall, my impression of Miho is that of the maturing commander backed by an ace crew. Her personality aside, tactically her main stock in trade right now are tricks thought up on the fly. Her conventional battle management skills are below average considering her level of experience and her best aspect is as a single tank commander (a trait shared by her sister)

In this sea of derps, Rabbit Team actually ends up looking very good.

Rabbit Team

Spoiler:

Ep3 ... not really a derp. Considering what they saw, trying something other than a stand-up fight is reasonable. And unless you really want to criticize them for not understanding that they are in a mudspot that was fine a moment ago and that the control differential of their tank will automatically transfer all power to the track suffering a loss of rolling resistance that was no derp.

Ep 4 ... not really a derp. They got out 5 seconds before their vehicle was hit. Miho should have gotten everyone out of there well before things deteoriated to that point. Miho would have lost the use of that vehicle anyway.

Ep 5 ... not really a derp. They at least remembered to try to engage Charlie and that was probably the reason why a gun wasn't quite laid. After that they continued to try to put shots on the target (Anglerfish and Hippo didn't even try, so any thoughts that they would have gotten Charlie are just speculation).

OVA ... some mistakes there, but no derp. They knew they weren't supposed to burst onto the road, but they had just speeded up considerably and like a teenager in puberty, just had a small coordination problem. The mistake was realized and corrected in haste (unlike Duck). Aya's choice to try and engage the target was suboptimal, but also a reasonable choice (the gun's characteristics are close to that of the armor) - it might have been a mistake but no more.

Ep 12 ... figured out what the Jagdtiger was doing a few seconds too late ... but one can hardly call this a derp, can we?

Overall ... they are that maturing team. They don't have anything uber strong, but are a reasonable all round team that does not make any really big mistakes and really just need a little more luck (and perhaps a better tank) to show their full colors.

In short, every crew they made had strengths and weaknesses, which is great. They are a new team. We don't expect perfection. And teams should have complementary characteristics.

So WHY, Mizushima, did you feel so pressed to nerf the one thing that Rabbit Team actually does better than the others?

You may say "Well, yeah, but it is just one according to you, arkhangelsk. Considering how many you racked up for the others, they are still doing pretty well." Numerically yes, but for one thing, the later in the game the derps are, the more they hurt, and der Film is the latest. Further, I bet many of you had trouble recognizing the derps I listed because the show covered them up in flowers.

But of course Rabbit Team's derp has to be out in the bare open.

Insofar, I would say it's unfair to assess the movie based on a mere eight minutes, but moreover, I contend that enjoyment of the movie should not be dictated entirely by technical details such as whether or not proper armour warfare protocol is followed, and even then, in the context of anime, I find it not necessary for the anime to follow things down to the letter to be enjoyable(for all of the things Girls und Panzer gets right in the TV series, it's no Tom Clancy by any stretch).

I'm personally more interested in how well the movie's events can convey whatever their theme is going to be, and how well all of the different elements of audio-visuals contribute to this. Theme and execution is weighted more heavily in my assessment than any technical details, which is why I would think that looking at just eight minutes and supposing this to hold for the remainder of the film is equivalent to looking at the first question on a student's exam and seeing that, since the botched it, they'll have failed the rest of the exam.

I do recommended you stop caring about a person that just want to make the movie sound bad.

You meant to say "it isn't the first 8 minutes of the match." Fine, I stand corrected on the exact placement of that clip - though in mitigation this is a mistake shared with the official uploader.

Now, I don't think your main beef with me is on that tiny detail really, so why don't you look into my minute by minute and point out some other mistakes?

Re the sound quality and resolution, if you actually read my minute-by-minute, you may notice that I did concede it might look a bit better in a cinmea. However, the question must be asked. While this is a cinematic production and will look its best in theater, shouldn't it also look pretty good otherwise? And if a scene is entirely carried by the extra boom of a theater, is it a good scene or are we getting hoodwinked.

For the records, GuP anime looks good independent of device. It looks good and gets the desired effect on my laptop. Am I being demanding to expect the cinema version to be as good

After watching that clip, I was rather amused and excited about this movie even more. I'm still baffled that a Churchill VII and Matilda II can keep up with T-34s but whatever. Makes the battles more exciting.

All right a few comments based on the diagram.

First, it seems that there is some confusion as to whether Pravda's last vehicle is a /76 or a /85, though the /85 would seem to make more sense.

Overall, they seem to have spread the kills around pretty well (a basic maneuver for this type of movie).

I see they've included a derp moment for Hippo. Since that's different from the one I heard about, the possibility of Hippo getting TWO derp moments cannot be ignored. I can see my essay expanding - yes, I don't mind about Hippo Team as much, but I stand by my statement - derp moments in this kind of film is a no-no.

Rabbit Team ... well, what's done with Nonna is done (is it really that funny? It isn't to me, and even if it is, that 8 minutes could have been better, OK, stop!) The allocation here isn't bad - I know they get a special and adding these two Chaffees makes it a better than average cull for this match (average is of course, 1, and most of the bigger characters get only 2), as long as they don't foul up the destruction at the hands of Alice. It is inevitable but PLEASE not like with Nonna!
