I'll be happy to play ball once the movie itself comes out I wasn't around when the Gundam 00: A Wakening of the Trailblazer was screening, but looking through the old threads here, there were similar discussions about whether or not people've seen the movie (and whether or not the spoilers were legit). After the movie's home release came out, there was a world of difference in the tone and subject of the discussions: once everyone had seen the movie, everyone could proceed on some solid facts. I imagine it'll be the same here.

I imaginge the History club wanted to ride with the German tanks. And the freshmen running with the American tanks works, as well as their reputation with taking out the Ferdinand and the Jadgtiger.

The rest of them are a makeshift harasment squad. I mean its the Hetzer and the Volleyball team, they specialize at harrasment plus trolling.

In short - open-topped is now allowed, thanks to MEXT.

To be fair, while I've said my projections about MEXT and Karl, its problems are elsewhere and this rule-change, in itself does have a popular base. There are already schools in canon that want to introduce open-topped vehicles (closing them up as best as they can), but can't quite sell their "roofkit plan" to the JSF.

BC Freedom wants to use a M10 and Anzio is considering vehicles like the Semovente 90/53. These vehicles are relatively cheap but they pack some of the best guns available to these schools.

If the schools have brains and a bit of concern for safety, even if they choose such vehicles they'll seal them up as best as they can, but it will cut some of the nitpicking red tape. Undoubtedly, the safety margin is reduced, but people stick their heads out all the time (thus the vehicle is not sealed) so it must be admitted this is not a devastating degradation and may even bring a bit of much-needed balance to the games.

So the University match isn't the only one. The match looks like a tag team match. I feel bad that Ooarai's tag partners got reckless in the match. Pravda's commander can't speak Russian (a bit discriminating since the rest can speak it). Pravda and St. Glorianna are somewhat cooperative with each other. Ooarai and the other high school (forgot the name) are cooperative, but tends to break off when the other high school gets to full of themselves.

I think the match is for who get to commander the whole entire HS team against the University team.

I really want spoilers for the match against the University team. Specially, who was still standing before the matched ended?

Umm...no [Pravda and St. Glorianna VS Oarai and Chiha-tan] match is just the exhibition match.

Didn't this match show in the movie PV? how can you not know about it?

I watched this one first on Bandai-Channel via VPN. As everyone knows, I already have gripes about the film just reading all the reviews and averaging the discussion. However, I expected it to be 109 minutes of goodness ruined by about 10 minutes of bad on those two topics (check my posts, I'm not being unpopular by repeating myself) that have strategic consequences.

Now, we are down to at best 101 minutes of goodness. Maybe I should have known it - when they aren't taking the slightest care on Basic Decisions, some (maybe many) of the smaller decisions will also be bad.

Here goes, the Minute-by-Minute review.

Spoiler for 0:00-1:00:

The first minute starts with Oarai (Anglerfish, Duck, Rabbit, Turtle, Anteater and Hippo) and Chi-Ha Tan isolating St G's infantry tanks, while Leopon & Mallard try to hold off Pravda. That was a good plan.

However, it is a bad idea for the movie team. Basically, Oarai shoots pretty well by now. Way too well for St G to last more than a minute in these circumstances. So they really reduce the hit rate of Oarai to allow Darjeeling to live. This is quite obvious (at least to me). People have complained about "A-Team Firing" in the past, but when you make the main characters do this, oh no!

Spoiler for 1:00-2:00:

OK, 2nd minute. Even so, they did manage to get two tanks (they even handed out one to Chi-Ha Tan, which is nice) and at this rate of destruction St G STILL won't last 3 minutes. So, Chi-Ha Tan decides to charge. Quite frankly, the whole scene where they decide to be insubordinate was not done with quite the requisite fervor so instead of them spontaneously deciding to charge, it feels a lot like they are "Obeying orders from the sky".

Further, if there is one good thing about the IJA, it is that it is disciplined (the lower ranks anyway). If they are told to hold still, they'd hold still. If they are told to charge into hopeless odds, they will do that. For a commander, these are good troops. But Chi-Ha Tan is not like that (barring their obedience to "God" which we are not supposed to notice).

Even more ridiculously, if the stereotypical IJA charges, it charges to the last, right INTO the enemy formation. But that might actually have worked. If they really are at zero distance to the St G tanks, they might actually be able to do some damage. Charging (more professionally, a reliance on "shock") is a feasible tactic in the low accuracy world of GuP.

So let's not do that. Let's have them stop right in front of St G near the end of the second minute, so Darjeeling can shoot them up. In fact the whole advance was dragged out way too long and lacked any feeling of speed - this isn't even cool.

They even repeated that birds eye view they did in Ep4. That worked though St G was kind of oozing up there because being a slow implacable wall is St. G's characteristic. It is entirely the wrong approach if you want to make a charge look impressive - they are moving faster than St G but the overall effect is still them "oozing" across the screen.

Perhaps it looks better in a cinema with the big screen and the booming acoustics, but sitting here, in front of a computer, it is utterly disappointing.

Spoiler for 2:00-3:00:

Third minute. St G is being awarded kills. These are easy kills, but they are kills, I guess. The overall effect looks like the director is pushing kills into their mouth...

The Chi-Ha Tans on the other side are also this and Pravda clips at least one. The best part of these 8 minutes come - I like Sodoko's solution to this problem. Interestingly, we learn that Sodoko can be reasoned and polite (at least to other schools) - this is one of her best moments.

Spoiler for 3:00-4:00:

Fourth minute. They retreat off the ridge and Pravda climbs on. Nonna is probably right - Pravda should just have maneuvered around the small speed bump. I like Sodoko continuing to push that Type 95.

Just around the transition between the third and fourth minute, we learn that St G and Pravda had 1.4 times more tanks and 1.9 times the firepower. This is both telling us a fact and a bit of foreshadowing - the film-makers have taken the decision that St G will win and is preparing to cushion the blow.

Spoiler for 4:00-7:00:

Fifth minute. The Crusaders show up and we get a brief situational display. Otherwise, the most interesting thing here is Sodoko and Nakajima trying to sooth the Type 95 commander as they continue to push her in the right direction.

Sixth minute. Nothing really much happens in the 6th minute - just them trying to reach the town. They then split up and try to draw away the enemy tanks like they did in Ep 12, but St G and Pravda are better than KMM and that was the difference.

Seventh minute: They get surrounded. I like how Mallard bumped the Crusader. Then Miho AGAIN reverts to what she does best ... a single tank commander. I guess that's foreshadowing for the troubles she'll meet later in the movie.

This last one gets kind of soppy and I go into paranoia. You are warned.

Spoiler for 7:00 to End:

Eight minute. My least favorite moment of an overall weak 8 minutes come. Rabbit Team challenges Nonna. To be honest, I do not expect them to win.

From a Watsonian standpoint, Nonna is a much more veteran commander in a much better tank. Further, if they try the same tactics they did in Ep12, given Nonna's personality, it just wouldn't go well. Further, as a turreted vehicle Nonna simply has more options than the Elefant and Jagdtiger did.

From a Doylist perspective, like in many anime there is a food chain in GuP. If Anglerfish is #1, then the other captains and vice captains except maybe Darjeeling are #2, Oarai broadly speaking is #3. Anyway, the fact of life is, Rabbit Team could be riding in a T29 and do everything right, and they'll still lose ... because it's Nonna, the vice captain of Pravda.

So I am not unhappy at the result and if they learn from it like I've been told they would, that's about the best possible result. I am furious at the process.

The whole come at the front and try to block their gun thing is a last-ditch grasp at survival and does not really resolve any problems unless convenient ditches are behind them. They had the right idea trying to come from behind. Why don't they do that this time?

Maybe they intended to actually do it properly but the requisite scenes were cut to fit 119 minutes. Here's the thing, director, there is something called a minimum time for everything. If you can't do the scene right of lack of time, PLEASE KILL THEM OFFSCREEN.

Or they've finally noticed something that I've noticed for some time now. Which is, when all is said and done, they hadn't actually given Rabbit Team any "derp (Gross Error)" scenes. Many other teams usually rated higher on the ladder have derpy decisions. Rabbit Team is actually that team that does everything properly (within their skill level) but just never seems to get too much luck.

You know what? It is nice you noticed, but THE SOLUTION IS NOT TO GIVE THEM A DERP SCENE! Or if you must give them a derp scene, at least cover it up with flowers like you usually do with all the other teams.

Any small attempts at humor fail to amuse me in the face of this. And you know what? I feel a bit guilty. Because there is a very small probability that this scene is my fault. True, I'm a nobody in the Internet. On the other hand, not many people hold my opinions. Maybe I shouldn't have written out how good Rabbit Team actually looked in the Anzio OVA - I wrote it in English and Japanese in a few places that are prominent enough if they are researching the Net for viewer opinions they might just see it. They might have seen it and decided for some "balancing".

While it is very unlikely indeed (I think they just noticed it for themselves), if this is true, Rabbit Team ... I am DEEPLY sorry.

So, overall, a very weak lead-in to the story. Unlike GuP the Anime, this time they are not making this film as an ending. Among this is their decision to leave Darjeeling as an "unresolved opponent". They seem to be somewhat aware that anytime you let an opposing school win over the protagonist, it needs to be carefully handled to avoid ill-feeling, and thus they had Assam tell us all about the correlation of forces.

Nevertheless, the general feeling I get from the 8 minutes so far is that Darjeeling is not earning her win so much as the director is feeding her the win, no matter what that means to the other characters. That's just not as convincing.

They are also making life difficult for themselves because as everyone already knows, their final opponent would be the University All-Stars. They would need to be at their best. So deliberately creating weaknesses might not be the best play for plausibility. If they need St G and Pravda to win, make them better.

Further, a principle of this kind of fan-movie is that you try not to create scenes that nerf or shaft specific teams, because they cause resentment and resentment potentially cost sales. Obviously this principle is being violated.

So, that's 8 minutes. Now we just need the other 111 minutes to hand out the final grade.

A bit of extrapolation finds that, if you've got ~1500 words of review for eight minutes, you'll have a 22500-word review for the whole movie To put that in perspective, assuming we're rocking size 12 Times New Roman font single-spaced, that's roughly 56.5 pages of text, or half a Master's thesis!

Insofar, I would say it's unfair to assess the movie based on a mere eight minutes, but moreover, I contend that enjoyment of the movie should not be dictated entirely by technical details such as whether or not proper armour warfare protocol is followed, and even then, in the context of anime, I find it not necessary for the anime to follow things down to the letter to be enjoyable(for all of the things Girls und Panzer gets right in the TV series, it's no Tom Clancy by any stretch).

I'm personally more interested in how well the movie's events can convey whatever their theme is going to be, and how well all of the different elements of audio-visuals contribute to this. Theme and execution is weighted more heavily in my assessment than any technical details, which is why I would think that looking at just eight minutes and supposing this to hold for the remainder of the film is equivalent to looking at the first question on a student's exam and seeing that, since the botched it, they'll have failed the rest of the exam.
