Having read the first four volumes of the manga, i'd rather say that it's the backdrop that's epic. The plot line and its interaction with the characters? Not so much.

Regarding voice actors, I'm no seiyuu expert, but here are my suggestions.

I'm sure we can fit Jouji Nakata in here somewhere, perhaps one of the higher-ranking officers such as the guy who commands the "Apocalypse Now" scene. If not, perhaps Nishina (I think), who seems to be the "veteran" of the squad.

As for Youji Itami, as well as Sgt. Kurata, some characters that have done "otaku" roles well in the past include Yutaka Koizumi (Satou, Welcome to the NHK), although perhaps Nobuyuki Hiyama would be best for Itami- having played both a soldier (Shiro Amada from Gundam 08th MS Team) and an otaku (Kouta Hirano, HOTD).

Yū Kobayashi as a voice for Kurokawa (or maybe Yao). I loved what she did as Rio in Soronowoto.

I am plenty hyped, but there is just no new info to analyse. I will post more often when we have more details on the length, arc, art style and expected quality of the final product.

Can't be winter. Winter already counts as 2016. But it was announced for 2015, so Fall is latest, unless it gets delayed.

Because of the style of the source material fits Madhouse and IG far more.
Gainax is known for colorful pop & spunky ero, not the down-to-earth unrefined ero/guro.

They are a master at cartoonish art, but we haven't really seen Gainax properly translate the feel of dirt, mud, and the stench of iron associated with warfare into anime.

I suspect they might be cutting back on the gore by using these generic orcs as the main enemy grunts. It is almost racist, but guess it can't be helped. Gunning down pig-men is just less problematic than killing Ancient Romans who clearly look human.

EDIT: Nevermind, I am told that the orcs were in the novels. False alarm.
