There's a pan to Hayate looking thoughtful after Mirage mentions that. Lifespan is definitely part of the drama when Heinz is mysteriously ill. It's definitely playing a part when Freyja's motivation to run off is because she can't waste time when her life is short to fulfill her dream. It's already an integral part of her characterization.

Heinz's illness is most probably tied to his songs causing VAR. Bad song energy causing damage to the singer was hinted at back in Macross 7.

By the way, Hayate doesn't need Freyja to feel the wind. He was all "this feeling is awesome!" before the Walkures started to sing in episode 4 and Freyja's fold receptors were off until Hayate beat the 171 and Mikumo cured the pilot anyway.

You need to re-watch episode 1. Before Freyja, Hayate didn't care for anything and was looking for a purpose in life, something that motivates him. He felt that when he flew and felt her trippy singing. After that experience, he realized what he wanted to do. It was thanks to her. Alto obviously didn't need Sheryl for years to start doing what he did in the movie (he even forgot their meeting ), but it was Sheryl who gave Alto the motivation to seek the sky as a child (she replaced the dead mother's plot). Sheryl and Freyja are fulfilling the same role as their catalyst.

It's alright because the triangle in sdf macross also includes minmay->hikaru<-misa and hikaru->minmay<-kaifun. As long as Jinan-kun doesn't go full kaifun, I'll be fine with him.

It could be interesting if Macross Delta was focusing on Freyja as MC and Hayate and Bogue as main love triangle.
