I wonder if Himmel's statues are going to look more and more ridiculous the deeper they get into Empire territory. It was a fun little chapter.

I'm expecting the reunion with Sein to happen next year. It may be closer at hand than we think.

I'd be curious how they'd reintroduce him and explain what happened with Gorilla.

Wirbel was heading north too, so I'd expect his return as well.

I think I've already said it but I'm fully expecting Gorilla to be dead, giving Sein his own reason to go to Aureole.

I can only think of two reasons why Gorilla wouldn't have kept his promise to come back in three years:

1. He died.
2. He got severely injured and had to quit adventuring, he never came back because he was either too ashamed or didn't want Sein to feel guilty.

I got the feeling that Gorilla "took an arrow to the knee" (ie: settled down and started a family). The author doesn't really feel like the kind to want characters to truly suffer time after time, and he already suffered from having not gone with him. Now it's time for him to get resolution, be happy, and move on.

He could have sent some kind of message to Sein to let him know he's fine if that's all it was. It's been a decade, and he ain't no elf.

Sein himself is under no delusion, he knows there's 90% chances he's dead, he just wants to know for sure so he can move on with his life. Finding out he died doesn't necessarily means Sein has to suffer more. If he found out from other people that Gorilla died with a smile on his face after saving some kids, that's more than good enough resolution.

Isn't travel into the Northen Plateau still restricted?

Unless Solitar was the cause and they lifted restrictions after Fern killed her, Sein would need to find another first-class mage to travel with to reach Empire territory and meet Frieren's party again.
That would be another story that needs to be told.

Yeah, it's possible that the reason for travel to the north was restricted like that is resolved now. If it hasn't, there would still be a way for Sein to meet Frieren's party there. We'll just have to wait and see on that one.

They're in the Falbe region, where a villager asks Frieren to take out some monsters that destroyed her carriage and the village's crops. They asked the Empire for help, but haven't heard anything from them.

The village is poor, so the lady actually can't pay them money or a grimoire this time, so Frieren asks if they have any magic items instead.
The lady offers a magic pot that gives you nightmares, which Frieren accepts because she's curious.

The three engage in some conversation while searching for the monsters, with Fern complaining about Frieren accepting something so weird, but Stark's used to it so he don't really care. (Fern threatens to put the nightmare pot next to Stark)
Stark then asks Frieren if the Empire is supposed to be this unsafe, to which she answers that she does feel like the village is desolate/in decline and completely different from the last time she came here over 80 years ago.

Stark says that's plenty of time for a country to rise and fall, and asks if that means the Empire has collapsed. Frieren denies it, saying that Stark doesn't know about the history of the Empire.
She talks about how the Empire's history goes back over 1000 years, where it's said that the entire continent was united under their flag.
They also had the greatest magical civilization on the continent, being capable of taking back territory from the demons 100 years ago during the war even when they were surrounded on all sides... but she does acknowledge that it does look like the place is unsafe now.

They find the monsters, though the fight is off-panel. Stark is sitting down, remarking that the monsters were ridiculously strong. Frieren wanders off to find out that the Empire's soldiers that were coming to kill the monsters are all dead.

Back in the village after doing a service for the dead soldiers, Frieren gets the nightmare pot and goes to see a statue of Flamme that looks nothing like her.
She reminisces about Flamme training the imperial court mages, many of them who are stronger than Frieren at that point.
Frieren said that with that much power, the Empire will never fall, but Flamme said that nothing lasts forever, and the perk of Frieren's long lifespan is that she'll get to see those changes.

Back in the present, she remarks that indeed, seeing how different the Flamme statue is from the real person is funny.
She tries out the nightmare pot, the end.

No break, next chapter will be next week.

It's nothing related to the chapter but the following thought occurred...

I've thought for some time that in the past Frieren found Himmel's narcissistic tendencies to be childish and/or mildly annoying. I wouldn't go so far as to say she now looks back on that fondly but anyway, at the time Himmel's attitude probably didn't help.

So the new thought is as follows: while it might have come natural to him as well, I think this was also Himmel trying to impress the woman he likes (Frieren), but it just came out in a somewhat childish way. It's kinda ironic since he was wise beyond his years in other ways but perhaps he never figured out how to chase girls in the past (it's more likely that they chased him).

It sounds plausible in my mind but there's no proof of course.

Not really surprising, but Flamme is basically the progenitor of all those useless spells Frieren collects. Her theories paved the way for countless spells to be devised by other humans after she passed away. Even after a thousand years, Frieren is still learning from her.

Back during the First Class Exam arc, Serie already said that magic used to be considered blasphemy practiced only by demons until Flamme was the first to make it accessible for humans.

This is more characterization for Frieren, as we finally get a reason why she collects all these useless spells.
There's also more signs that the empire isn't in a good state. Monsters aside, Denken mentioned that he became the imperial court mage after a political conflict that killed off mages stronger than him.
Armee's family losing their status because of politics kind of lines up with Denken's experience with the empire.

It's Wednesday in Japan, so the new Frieren chapter is out. I didn't have a chance to check this morning to read the raws.

Anyway, it's Stark's birthday again, so I guess he's 19 now?
Fern's birthday was only a few chapters after Stark's last time(Stark's 18th was in ch26, Fern's 18th was in ch29), so I wonder if we'll see hers sometime next month too.

Lots of the same old as last time, but Fern showed some progress this time by being able to think of a present all on her own.

Next chapter will be in next week's issue as usual. No breaks.

Spoiler for 120: The story this time is about exaggerating history. Chapter is about a village having a festival celebrating the day Himmel killed the Demon King. They're told to go touch a statue of Himmel for good luck, but they find that it looks nothing like him this time. Frieren says that the deeper into the Empire they go, the more people glorify and exaggerate Himmel's adventures like this. Both Frieren and Himmel in the flashback are fine with it though, because it doesn't change what they accomplished.

Shadow5YA Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2010	It's Wednesday in Japan, meaning Shounen Sunday is out, along with the newest Frieren chapter Spoiler for ch122: Titled the "Titan Citadel/Stronghold" Title page is of Frieren sitting in a field of flowers looking at Flamme's gravestone. As the title says, they're at the Titan Citadel, an impregnable fortress used during the war against the Demon King. Said to be ruled by Graf Almey (haku 伯= Count/Earl, but I'm using Graf because of the series' tendency to use German), who were more macho and warrior-like than noble-like. Someone nearby is fighting monsters, so Stark and Fern are about to go help out, but Frieren says it's not necessary. They find a shirtless muscular man doing a chokehold on a wolf monster The man introduces himself as Almey. Stark freaks out that he's being rude and informal to a noble (again) and prostates himself, but Almey says that his family's status was lost during his grandfather's generation, so he's now just working as a mercenary. Anyway, Almey makes a request for the party to help him retrieve his family's treasure deep within the fortress, which he's been having trouble doing because of all the monsters. He offers half of the gold and silver found as a reward, but of course Frieren wants magic so he offers "body-warming magic" as the reward. (Fern comments that they're unsually getting some useful magic this time) There's some entertaining montage panels of him doing a flying kick on some monsters and punching open doors along the way. They reach the basement, where a strong serpent-like monster is blocking the way. Almey asks if Frieren wants to stay back, because he feels bad that she's risking her life just for magic, but she says that's not all there is to it. This time the flashback is a conversation she had with an aging Flamme. Frieren is lamenting that Flamme is getting old, and asks her why humans study magic despite getting old and dying so quickly. Flamme tells her that right now she's studying the principle of irreversibility. All the theories and principles she's discovered so far are the proof of her existence. Even if she grows old and dies, all the magic and principles she's made and will be there for Frieren to discover for herself firsthand. Back to the present, Almey asks if they're really fine not taking the money, and Frieren says that the magic is more important to her. Later, Frieren tries the magic on Stark. He says he feels warmer, but not enough to be going topless. Fern comments that the result the same as usual.
