This film is a proper canon arc of the series.

There've been a few precedents for this as well. Including on the aforementioned list. I don't share the worry.

I don't mind anime original movies. I don't like when they make the next arc in a movie so there is the wait until is released outside Japan. And I really hate when then the next season still make the arc in the movie. Actually I'm not very fond of this story, otherwise I would be angry, but is a practice that I hope don't stick because eventually is gonna reach some franchise that I'm actually fond of.

In the case of this Series, the Movie adaptation based on original Light Novel plot is actually viable.

Reason being the lack of post material in the Light Novel.

The Anime has covered until now 7 Arc (4 in S1 & 3 in S2) from the Light Novel covered in 3½ Volumes (from Volume 1-4).
The Movie would cover the last Arc of LN Vol.4.

After that, we currently (as of this post) have only two more LN Volumes (aka., Vol.5 & 6), consisting of 4 Arcs.

That at most would give us one Season of Anime with 11-13 episodes (even if they hadn't made the last Arc of Vol.4 as a Movie).

By going the Movie route, they are giving themselves more time to make the next Anime season, while also giving time for Author to write down more volumes (considering if Author releases one LN Volumes per year like he did for last two volumes, we should theoretically get 2 more volumes by the time 3rd Season of Anime airs after the Movie, since i don't see S3 happening before late 2025, even if we get the Movie in mid or late 2024).

I get the idea behind it; to separate smaller ones so there's little burden for S3, like Mugen Train, yes.

Still, movie duration may lead to hit or miss depend on one expectation.
I already saw some anime-only audience expected more fabulous Atomic for movie.
