Struggling with the "friend zone"

Pretty simple request. I'm looking for stories in which one person views another as a friend and wants to stay friends even though the "main" character wants something more. And I'm looking for something fairly tactful, not something that treats the one who wants to be friends as somehow in the wrong or anything, though they certainly could struggle with their feelings when/if the main confesses or find themselves feeling uneasy or awkward when they start to realize they too are falling in love. And preferably I'd like to focus on stories where the pair do end up together (I like stories like D N Angel where the main eventually notices someone else, but here that's not what I'm looking for). I'm mainly looking for manga and light novels, though anime is also fine of course.

Chihayafuru has this in spades.

I just watched the third Hibike! Euphonium movie last night where the relationship between childhood friends Kumiko and Shuuichi has some of this as well. Need to watch the beginning two seasons first though.

Chihayafuru is adapted from a manga; Eupho comes from light novels.

How about both are struggling to just stay friends, but the Goddess of Love interferes with their feelings? (Fantasy Bishoujo Juniku Ojisan to)

Otherwise check out Kara no Kyoukai, if you haven't already.

Hmm... Tamako Market? Although it only comes into real focus in the movie.

You've literally described Yesterday wo Utatte.

Sorry; dynamic content not loaded. Reload?

Almost everyone who watched the series ended up bitterly disappointed, though. Your mileage may vary.

Yesterday wo Utatte is an excellent choice for this thread. I generally share Cosmic Eagle's opinion about the ending.

it comes to my mind hanasaku iroha, but romance is not the focus until the end.

Romance doesn't necessarily have to be the main focus, as long as it's still present and significant. Some of my favorite romances take place while people are trying to "save the world" or something of the sort.
