After playing about 3/4 of the game, I still stand by what I've said. The environments are very varied.
The complains of "Oh it's just one Japanese castle after another" is like saying Dark Souls is one derelict town after another. Disingenuous at best. And that's not to mention having different time of day and sometimes even different weather as well. Quote:

Hey everyone. I'm interested in the game, but I've heard that the weapon balance is severely off. Apparently the sickle and chain is far and away the best weapon in the game, to the point where there is no point in using any other weapon. Is that true?

I've bought the DLC, but I'm going to try to NG+ Persona 5 first before going back.

Sword and Axe does massive single damage potential. Dual swords and Kusarigama does spam attacks. Spears have range and the best crowd control. If everything is OP, nothing is OP.

Ok I've gotten the hang of how to use the Odachi already, super satisfying to pull off a "charging bull" and slam the enemy onto the ground. Basically an easier "Tempest Backhand"
"Tiger Blade" is another satisfying move to hear going off.

Complete edition GET! I have to say, I expected a dark souls feel out of the game, but instead it is massively Tenchu with a good idea of Onimusha. Lots of weapons to use for a variety of battlegrounds, really well-built stages that don't require 15' on foot to cross and the progressive choice between frame rate and resolution - didn't expect that one.
The only thing that kind of baffles me so far is the frequency of drops: there are so many that I end up offering most of them, especially armour. As far as weapons go, I like the spear, tonfa and dual swords the best so far. The battle mechanics are challenging, but require more tactics than reflexes, with yokai fights making the game very satisfying. Hope I can beat this in 2 weeks' time... |

Update: getting a platinum in Nioh this week, only 6 kodama and a hot spring away from it now. I don't know how many hours I ended up playing, but it was definitely worth it.
- Story: well, nothing too awesome, but exactly what you'd expect of a war-heavy game. - Graphics: Nioh puts every other action game to shame. I can't go back to playing Dark Souls for the remaster, because it looks lackluster in comparison. - Characters: great voice acting, lots of actually interesting characters, once you get to distinguish them. The DLC stories made very good use of them. - Gameplay: simply the best. I've used all weapons, ninja tools, normal items and magic the game has to offer, and it really leaves you free to do whatever you want - I have 10+ skill resets and I've used a couple already. The combat system is very fluid, with few exceptions, and depending on your skill set, all play styles are favoured; you can be bent on breaking everyone's ki and getting grapple kills, patiently waiting for a counter to every attack, dodge and position yourself behind enemies, or not engage in close combat and fight from afar with knives, poison, elemental talismans and man's best friends: spirits! Add to all that a very easy and quick-to-use living weapon mechanic, and you got yourself what is, for me, AAA gameplay. Replayability: quite a lot. I've finished all samurai and almost all strong missions, I'll still take on the way of the demon and explore the abyss up to at least 100F. Upgrade/equipment system: oook. Completely useless until you finish the game, but crucial to the meta, because that's when the level cap hits and you can finally customize your gear without dropping it for something else in the next dungeon. Boosting your ATK/DEF with other stats is a huge combat factor and a great addition to allow all kinds of builds (yes, even LUK builds when luck is not a stat you directly raise) and the unlimited effects and status debuffs are definitely worth a try. Music: I like it, I like it a lot. Except Sekigahara's main theme, can't stay battle-focused for the entirety of that campaign. Level design: for the most part, genius. I didn't like how many stages were maze-like, though. The first time exploring them, I could spend 20' just dashing around an empty stage, trying to find out where to go next. I also dislike the use of artillery fire in the DLC stages, it is even cheaper than pitfall deaths, and in higher difficulty settings, it's just frustrating to get through. Speaking of which... Difficulty: fair. The first run's boss fights can and will leave you begging for elixirs, but that's only until you familiarize yourself with them. Stage battles are well balanced, with the exception of the DLC stages, where almost every enemy is a mini-boss, and the human enemies in most stages have actual boss stats (like that one mission where you kill around 12 of them?). At higher difficulty settings, I believe the game is impossible without either superior reflexes or the evil eye butterfly, which prevents instadeath, because...well, let me give an example: at LV230+, with 40 life, my max HP is ~4k. A single large beam attack from Umibouzu deals 6k normal damage and 28k water damage. Case closed. My only gripes are the ki focus window on the kusarigama, which starts off very late if you're skilling combos, and the initial cast time for onmyo jutsu. The game also kinda forces you to certain weapon choices when you have to hit high and when you can't swing anything large around, but these cases are few and far between. Also, wheel monks can drop the frame rate significantly if they're spotted from afar. A minor inconvenience, but still noteworthy. Favourite weapons: tonfa with kannagi, spears, odachi. The latter has a slick combo of five hits, three of which are strong! The DLC weapons really made a difference for my experience. Although you have the dual swords for duels, the tonfa are even more aggressive and stack status effects even faster, and the odachi just flows a lot better than the axe for me. Overall experience: 10/10, will keep playing until this comes out: |
