Anime studio Fukushima Gainax announced at a press conference on Sunday that it is producing an anime titled Rescue Academia. Fukushima Gainax president Yoshinori Asao announced the project, and revealed that Yui Makino and Taku Yashiro will voice characters in the anime.

The anime is currently in production, and is slated to be finished in 2018. The project is aiming for television broadcast. Asao hopes that, through the anime, a lot of people will head to Minamisōma.

Plot Summary
The story will be set in the city of Minamisōma in Fukushima prefecture, and will center around a down-and-out protagonist who gets to know a robot while working rescue efforts. It will depict the friendship and growth of a group of children alongside the robot. Local traditional crafts such as Ōborisōmayaki pottery will appear in the story. Fukushima Gainax is producing the anime to promote Fukushima's "Innovation Coast" initiative that aims to revive industry and tourism in the region after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

No, Gainax still exists - it's just that Fukushima Gainax (which was an offshoot to begin with) stopped calling themselves Gainax.

Weren't those announcements previously linked with original Gainax? Studio hasn't made anything since Pleiades show. Was that arabian "anime" announced few years ago released?

Tokyo Gainax still exists, at least officially. Whether they're ever going to get anything produced again is another question.
