Because it covers a very board base of fans, you have the moe enthusiasts, miltakus, ijn otakus, seiyuu otakus. Moreover the game is actually easy to play with little need to upkeep if you manage to jump over two big hurdles, getting an IP for the lottery AND winning the lottery. Language barrier is not much of a problem with wikis to check and applications such as Kancolle viewers. I feel that the KC fans are a little less elitist than the grognards in the Touhou fanbase (where hurling the word "secondary" as derogatory term for people who don't play the shmups is quite a common occurence, especially with the touhou western fanbase).

From a casual point of view, that jump of popularity can be compared to Minecraft, where their creators expected little and get caught in a tsunami.

Don't forget the alleged patriotism and glorification of the IJN. The JMSDF also has no issues with exploiting the popularity of the series, from various promotions that I have seen (the fact that they have ships in active service with the same names as the characters helps); in the same way you see with the US Military in Transformers and many other films, with less cute cartoon girls and more movie stars.

Look back several pages -- this has been asked repeatedly, and Klash gave a run-down on the main reasons why this series clicked. There's a REASON why this series managed to overtake Touhou in barely a single year.

Actually no. If anything, the game points out many flaws of the IJN (such as Akagi saying they shouldn't be overconfident and the likes).
Also, there is -very- little points that actually promote war (the vast majority of the girls do not enjoy any fights), and there is actually a very few mentions of Japan. In fact, there is NO mention of "The Empire of Japan".
Likewise, the allies are not even mentioned. The abyssal ships have only cues due to their weapon calibers, but past that, they don't even resemble to their actual counterpart.

The only "somewhat" nippon banzai stuff in there is Hiryuu and Souryuu's headband. Past that, it has basically 0 political message behind it.
