Considering this...I've been paying attention to Jiyu's school, and noticing how NOBODY wears the same school uniform, they're all archaic outfits from different eras in the past.

The landscape outside of their town is WEIRD. The forests, jungles and cliffs are practically supernatural.

Holy smokes....I think THEY'RE ALL DEAD! Jiyu's Hometown is some kind of purgatory, like Haibane Renmei. Except the borders aren't as fixed. Whether _Jiyu_ is, or not, is debatable. If anyone _isn't_ dead, it's probably Jiyu, Sai, and MAYBE Freesia.

(We do, after all, see Sai leave the town to a larger town to discuss things with the author he helps ghostwrite for.)

Of course, this being purgatory, folks "live" out their lives before leaving. There are higher planes of existance, as evidenced by certain spirits ascending into the sky in the last episode. Something interesting to note....the "monkey brothers" often discussed "getting ready to leave" throughout season 2. Whenever they did, we see them as "normal" humans.

Which is exactly what happens to ascending spirits. They stop being caricatures. The Monkey Brothers are still goofing off in the end, so they're not ready YET but they're closer than, say, Shiro and Bantaro.

I once had a theory that Jiyu and Freesia have non-human blood through their mothers. Jiyu's mom died from the supernatural fever (something that ice couldn't cool down) that Jiyu uses to power-up. We don't know much about Freesia's Siberian mother, but it was her Ice Affinity that helped her survive being frozen for 300 years. That was before she created her Spade Eyepatch. Likewise, Jiyu has healing powers even without the eyepatch.

That could explain how Jiyu and Freesia travel to Purgatory and back....though it doesn't explain Sai. Maybe he's along for the ride. Like the opposite of how Nizaemon doesn't ascend even though he deserves it, because he has to look after Kitaro. Likewise Sai can follow to Purgatory.

That is a really interesting and creative theory you have there.

But I have to say this.

Not every story has to be logical or explainable, this especially holds to those with supernatural stuff in them (i.e. ghosts, spirits).

So don't think too much in watching Jubei-chan, just enjoy the action & comedy.

I was reading some old posts in this thread, and I thought I'd revive a certain thing.

Someone, I forget who, said they were a Jiyu/Koinosuke fan.

Sounds like you'd like the manga. <g> It's what the first season was based on.

Instead of <spoiler> stopping the main bad guy, it was Koinosuke who "held" him, and Koinosuke had Jubei-chan drive her sword through his heart to get to the main bad guy.

But.....it's revealed in the Manga that Jubei-chan's sword CAN'T kill people. In fact, it grants life. So Koinosuke lives with the Nanohana's in the end. (kinda the way Mikage and Mick do in second season.)

Anime totally goes a different direction, though.

P.S. Anime, though, I'm totally a Freasha/Jiyu fan. (What? <g>)
