Here are some basic things you can do you more than likely already did them. 1 start the avi file than after it plays for a view seconds stop it, go to the view tab select options hardware accelartion none.
2. Once again select view this time go to settings there should be a thing that says mpeg layer 3 audio decoder select quaility than quarter, downmix, 8bit.
Unfourntantly you will lose stereo sound but it does help with the sound sync at least for me.
Another thing at least I find that helps is turning off as many back round programs as possible.
3. As a last resort you could try uninstalling ffdshow and only using the codecs. Along with steps 1 and 2 note again this a last resort.

I do'nt know if this works or if it'll lag your computer alot. You can try just going control+alt+delete. Go to the program list. When you get there look for the media player program. Right click and set to realtime. Don't know if it will work for you. May seriously lag your computer.

Otherwise try shutting off as many programs that are on your computer. Could be lag from the computer doing too much right?

Oh, then maybe you need to upgrade video drivers?

If that is the ONLY file that lags it may be the audio type in that file, if they all do try and make sure you have EVERYTHING you had installed before for video playback. Back when I was on my 233MHz even mplayer would not keep sync and yet the crappiest player out there, the playa (version that came with divx 4, not the newer ones, they are crappier) was accually the ONLY thing with shows of an aspect ratio of 512x384 or larger to play back in sync, LOL....
