Editing subs

hi,
i'm new to this, so please bear with me.
How do you edit softsubs in anime files (including mkv ones)?
Is there a simple guide anywhere?

Extract with MKVtoolnix's extraction GUI and open the .ass file with Aegisub.

As Starks here already said, I, too, would recommend trying Aegisub (clicky) and looking at the Help topics. They will help you at getting started with basic subbing from timing to some styling etc.

Although I'd say that you can edit basic .srt with just Notepad, as the format is pretty much readable "RAW".

And if you need to get the softsubs extracted from the MKV file you can use MKVToolnix with MKVextGUI (I'm pretty much on the same rails as Starks).

And, as a side note, if you plan to use edited subtitle files in a release, please consider at least asking the permission of the original makers to use the scripts. If it's for private use, it's another thing.
