Western Movies to Anime recommendations
I'm trying to compile a list of anime recommendations based on western movies with similar themes - this list will be for anyone who is skeptical of anime but wouldn't mind trying out one or two. Here are a few that I've thought of / looked up:
Movie / Anime Inception / Paprika - although Paprika could be a bit too much for someone new to anime so I'd replace it with Stein's; Gate or something similar The Matrix / Ghost in the Shell Black Swan / Perfect Blue Her / Chobits Transcendence / Serial Experiments Lain Lucy / Elfen Lied Avatar / Mononoke-hime I understand that a lot of these could be considered to be rip offs and not actual recommendations, but it gives you a place to start. TO CLARIFY ANYTHING WILL BE HELPFUL but do try to think of something that isn't so straight forwards like the Matrix and Ghost in the Shell. For example one of my pairings is Hunger Games and Future Diary or Kanji, both anime series are dueled out in a separated area and the players are entertainment for some higher being. It doesn't have the same plotline, but it's similar enough. Thank you and good luck |

Thinking of a counterpart on spot will be hard but the following ones are close to Western style:
Monster (Any detective series, really) Seirei no Morbito Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom Beck Berserk (I guess Game of Thrones could work as comparison. Medieval with lots of violence, death and supernatural elements) Death Note Fate/Zero Hansaku Iroha Psycho-Pass Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin Sakamichi no Apollon Uchuu Kyoudai What does come to mind: Final Destination/Another

I have always viewed Black Lagoon as heavily influenced by Western action movies (and European existentialism).
You could pair Uchuu Kyoudai with the movies to which it pays tribute including The Right Stuff and Apollo 13. Of course, the first half of Uchuu Kyoudai was adapted into a live-action film.
