It’s a little jarring for Dia to reference μ's in a training context because she’s the one who said school idols have to go above and beyond what μ's did, but the episode is otherwise fantastic. The girls’ dynamics and the sheer presence of Mari and Dia take the show on the fun side, while little bits of resurfacing drama with Riko pepper the episode. The wheels are starting to turn for You, while Chika and Riko’s relationship is handled tastefully. It falls in line with all of their past developments and moments where they’ve emotionally uplifted each other. And the aesthetics didn’t have the need to hammer the point home due to confidence in what the writing has built up. All of this culminates in even stronger development that’s now pushed Chika and Riko to the top of Aqours with Dia and Ruby, but will You follow suit? Find out next time!

chikariko is so cannon chika is so all over riko she wont let her sleep at night

not really a fan of chika piano contest tho, but it will probably be fine after a little mandatory drama

i really liked ruby and dia interactions this episode, the sisters make for a cute duo

Well, now I'm sold... on Chika/Riko.

That was truly beautiful. Many het romances, let alone many yuri romances, never get the desired "I love you". This one's achieved it, and it makes for such a sweet final scene for this episode.

Now, I'm not going to get my hopes up too high here, not after all the Hibike! Euphonium stuff.

But in any event, Chika/Riko is truly heartwarming right now, and has become my favorite aspect of Sunshine. While I feel a little sorry for You, this episode has put me on the Chika/Riko bandwagon. Yes, I now ship Chika/Riko.

Chika was already at the top of my Sunshine girls list after last episode, and this episode probably moves Riko into 2nd place for me.

The rest of the episode was mostly good, with some good color and decent comedy, but what's definitely most special to me in Sunshine is Chika/Riko.

Well the one muse reference we got was actually somewhat justified this time, because in the OG we never actually saw them attempt the routine. The closest thing we got to that was maybe Umi going crazy in the mountains .

That aside...

* Mari/Dia/Yoshiko were absolutely hilarious this episode. I need to reevalute my character rankings again.
* Maru is definitely going to get a dieting episode next season
* Kanan definitely has the best swimsuit figure
* Ruby needs to stop being so freaking adorable
* You, please don't go Yandere on us, I can see it happening
* Chika is showing exactly why I consider her the best girl
* Riko is making a strong case for permenant second best girl despite Dia's hilarity. I like how she and Chika are so honest with each other so they can avoid the Mari/Kanan and Honoka/Kotori scenarios.

** Plus they're so shippable.

And to think I loved all these characters before, episode 10 just multiplied my love for them by a factor of 128. The payoff of finally having all 9 members in this episode was so worth it. So absolutely worth it. Aquors with these 9 characters is so absolutely fuckin strong. The characters and their relationships and interactions with each other are what make the Love Live series so enjoyable to watch. They bounce off each other with incredible ease and impact. Thanks to Mari, Dia, and Kanan, the group has been lifted to a heightened state of total and utter magnificence. They can finally stop beating around the bush and gush all over the screen with their large and endearing personalities. Every. single. fuckin. character had such their moment to shine.

The only bad thing about this episode is that with so many great moments, some might end slipping out of the top of your head before it ends

First of all, DIA-SAMA HAS AWOKEN AT LAST! It even gets acknowledged in-series! Seeing her being so doting on Ruby and finally show her insanely competitive self was such a treat, it reminded me why I got interested in Aqours in the first place. Everyone else was pretty damn good as well, from Yohane being her awesome self, to Mari going nuts and even full shoujo eyes at one point, it was all a barrel of laughs.

A few extra notes:
I want that shark sleeping bed
One hagu wasn't enough for Mari
Dia, look at a mirror. Kanan isn't the only one with a knockout figure.
Unironic thanks for continuing to shove Yohane's body in my face, Sunrise.

Do you see a male childhood friend somewhere? Do you see MALES somehwere?

But yeah, more than confirmed at this point. Looking forward to all the beautiful doujins this is guaranteed to get. Well, if not everyone is busy with KananMari.

Now, for the last big challange: giving You drama without making her look like a moron, and actually, I'm pretty optimistic in that front, given how the dramatic side of things has been handled so far, and there IS the issue of Chika focusing too much on Riko without looking at Aqours as a whole. Of course, they could be cool with it, but there comes the issue of this being a whole group effort.

Please don't mess up, You.

Cough cough... ugh... That ending!!!!

It's super effective critical bit!

"I love you"

First is riko then Chika needs to fix her other girl you.

Ugh.. lots of early scenes made me pause the video. Dia's change of behavior is just waaaaaaay to sudden.

This is the true Dia that has finally revealed herself. We must embrace it.

They even said what was up with that: she's been holding back to play jerk along with Kanan, but now she's free to be her crazy self.

Dia's more cheerful and ambitious/optimistic now because she's back to being a school idol again. She's once again fully embracing what she loves, so that raises her spirits some.

Aside from that, Dia is typically a very loud and outspoken character.

I'm trying to remember from the OG but didn't Kotori also tell Honoka and Umi she loved them both in S1E9? That was more in the platonic way of course.

Riko is however confirmed into Yuri, so she probably means it in the more literal sense.

The shipper in me is going nuts over this episode.

On one hand, I do think if this was written in a country more accepting of LGBT relations, Riko would probably swing that way. On the other hand, I have a suspicion that the writers are putting out Riko's sexual orientation without outright spelling it out.

That being said, I do think the confession is platonic, or at least will be seen by Chika as platonic, and a declaration of an incredibly close teenage two-girl friendship. In other words, I think they are playing Chika-Riko in the Class S sense.

Also, I theorize that You overheard the entire conversation; and this conversation might be a trigger for a You-centric end-game revolving around You's noticeable lack of reason to be in Aqours, other than her friendship with Chika - and that Chika and You ironically seem to be drifting apart. It must really hurt to see Chika and Riko having those intense heart-to heart moments, and You locked out of it. In other words, we might have just seen the trigger for an Aquarium scenario.

Another thing to consider, perhaps more important, all those moments involved the original three together, whereas with Chika and Riko it's always been about the two of them, and no one else. While a bit unfair to You, I do believe that makes it easier to ship them. Yes, you can always go OT3, but can you imagine a confession as heartfelt as Riko's in that context?

Ok, maybe, but you'd have to try harder, I believe.

I hate how fake the vast majority of same sex relationships in anime are depicted. I'm never under the impression the viewer is meant to think the two could seriously be sexually/romantically attracted to one another.

Pretty much every single time it falls into the schoolgirl lesbians trope. It's just a phase. They aren't actually in love. It's merely pandering to a particular audience. That wasn't a romantic confession, but one of friendship and deep appreciation. Rarely does a show go all in and depict them as just as legitimate.

A series like the somewhat recent Yuri Kuma Arashi that took same sex relationships seriously and was actually a self righteous defense against how they're treated in Japan should not be the exception to this. It's so hard to find any anime with that kind of subject matter precisely because it's just not anywhere near as accepted in Japan as it is in other parts of the world. So 9 times out of 10 it's never meant to be taken seriously. It is and comes off as incredibly fake.

I'd love for this to be different. I guess we'll see which way they go with it. Right now things are not looking good.

The farthest anime usually go, as I wonder where you've been for the previous episodes, with yuri is build it up without confirming anything, while some throw in a guy at the last minute because it got too gay and it indeed becomes a phase. However, LL! has no guys, therefore that cynical trick can't be played
