Since my head is always full of thoughts that I have trouble translating into words and explanations I'll just keep it brief.
I cried. The third year drama was much much deeper and depressing than I'd thought from what Dia mentioned last episode. Still I'm glad it got resolved the way it did. And yes, Dia played them all like a game of chess lol. Also, a month or so for that insert?! NO I WANT IT NOW. ITS SO GOOD. Oh by the way, this is the first episode without a single muse reference. ARE YOU HAPPY NOW HATERS?! Edit: I can see no matter what there's still going to be complaints <_<...yeah the pacing might not be the best but most 13 episode seasonal animes tend to have bad pacing in general, what else is new? I honestly didn't think it was possible for something being built since the start to fall short of its own expectations. A few Precision Wham Moments™ doesn't make up for the musical bombast, presentation, and pacing issues the episode had. It also needed to be about the 3rd years and not the other six tailing them
What the Hell happened to the staff between episode 8 and episode 9...

well i rather liked the episode. i've got a "yay finally" moment when mari slapped kannan, i really hate the kinda thing she was doing. if you are worried for a friend just talk with them, no need to pull all this crap.
mari and dia on the other hand just shot higher in my rating i was so amazed at chika going in to tell the third year to knock it off, way to go chika i laughed at you's uniform catching jump, that crazy girl, don't do this |

Mess of an episode. This is what happens when you're stuffing the episode with way too many things happening at once. Argh, I can't. This is stuff that needs to be separated into two proper episodes, or just given ten more minutes if they wanted to wrap everything up in a single episode.
I can't. edit: I appreciate the nod to the first PV, though. |

I have a feeling that the former will not happen until the second season, while Sunrise will probably want to get the "Save Our School" plot out of the way as soon as possible. Quote:
No offense to Honoka fans, but Badass Chika >>>> Wimpy Honoka. But in fairness to Honoka, despite giving up too easily at the first sign of adversity and Umi bossing her around, she does have insane luck and magical powers. |

No worries. I heard the next episode will be LEWD.

The problem with 1-cour animes nowadays is that they have the tendency to stuff too much material on just one episode, but when you do that at near the tail end of the season, you can't end the season well unless you stuff too much material at once. Would you rather this season to end on a sorta cliffhanger and start the second season with the final act of Sunshine's "Save Our School" plot? People will complain about Muse references yet again. To be honest, i think the Save Our School plot is a multi-season affair, up there with changing Aqours image so as not to be like Muse.
That being said, I found the first half of the episode very strong and well done, with lots of feels and character revelation. Above all, it breaks down the Sempai-formality and shows the Third Years at their quirkiest, most absurd and most humanized in the entire series. My problem is with the second half of the episode, which I found was incredibly rushed, and I think two episodes would have been ideal from the pacing standpoint. But then again, as some other posters have pointed out, it's a one cour anime, with it's pacing limitations. The next episode would likely be a bonding episode - and I sense that Episode 11-13 will probably be about You, and possibly the Aquarium PV. Since You is the last person without a motive to be in Aqours that is independent of Chika. |

Eh. It was OK, I gues? Nothing too special. Nice musical number in the end, but also not exactly memorable. Not a fun of Kanan's voice actress, however. I felt like she was not particulary good at acting. She reminded me of Minami Hamabe's voice acting in One Piece: Heart of Gold specal (granted, not nearly as bad), and just like there, it was especially noticable because of the good acting of other characters (main cast in HoG and Aina Suzuki's Mari here).

Drama was kinda over the top. Kanan totally messed it up by being a bitch when in reality she cared. Like what exactly did she plan to achieve? 2 years ago she wanted Mari to study abroad for her own good, ok fair.
But why be an ass now? She was irrational. Dia should have said something sooner. Still have to admire Dia, she pretty much sacrificed all of her wishes and dreams to keep her best friends "happy", their wishes were more important to her. And then secretly motivating Chika and the rest and being best sis ever to Ruby. Personally, hope there is some sort of Dia centred episode. Granted whole 3rd year drama was resolved, but I think she deserves some attention, she is too much on the side. And it's official, she is NozoEri love child. A stubborn school president who is a mother of school idol group. Might be why I like her the most of the bunch. Either way it was fun to observe 3rd year interactions, Dia clearly enjoyed seeing Kanan/Mari interacting. And I have to applaud to Chika this time, someone had to do it and even the bossy Dia submitted to Chika's anger and will and obediently followed her. All members are gathered, question is, where will series go now? What I liked the most about Sunshine so far, was 3rd year dynamic and drama. With that solved, series better not go back to blunt copying of LL! again. Series just finally started to get entertaining.

I won't comment on the drama and the episode in general, still sorting out my thoughts on that.
I did however adore the dance and song at the end of the episode. It was glorious! Absolutely beautiful, both the song and the level of visuals. THIS is the kind of insert song effort we should have been getting from Aqours from the start rather than the lackluster episode 1 insert, the decent episode 3 insert, and the nice song but unimpressive visuals in the episode 6 insert. It definitely ended the episode on a excellent note. |

It'll probably get better next episode once she's back to cheerful big sister Kanan. Plus I really love her singing voice. Sure its not the greatest (That belongs to Riko in my opinion!) but its definitely not in my bottom half by a long shot. |

So, Kanan was being a baka ouji all along, and Mari was too busy "playing" at being Nozomi to come clean herself. Meanwhile Dia was just being a good friend to both. No wonder I like her so much. Ahhh, that smile at the end Oh, and mystery solved (I totally thought it had been Mari).
I do agree this felt quite fast, but since there was really no issue with Dia in the first place, there's no way to continue dragging it, and if you see Mari as the Nozomi of the group, as I did for a while this is a hell of a role reversal, which is nice. Also, for some reason, I kept expecting the final song to boom higher, so I was a bit let down. Maybe I've been thinking too much of sunny day song lately. As for the good stuff, well, duh, Kanan is finally free from the clutches of drama! And now we don't even have to try shpping her with Mari! The show has done all the work for us But really, its nice to see her smiling. We'll probably be seeing an Eri type conversion next episode, and honestly, I'm fine with that. Of course, I also have to say, WELL DONE, CHIKA! Screw all this secrecy and drama and lets all be honest with each other! Jeez! This is a really good side of Chika not being as much of a natural leader as Honoka, she has to really put her foot down to get things done, and I hope we see more of this later. On the fun side, Yoshiko sure has a grip on the Kurosawa siblings And dammit, You, contain your fetish! But the best part of all was the preview: PART TIME JOBS!!! At last, the time has come! Aqours full potential is about to be unleashed! Time to go CRAZYYYYYY!!!!! |
