Creating this thread for anyone to share info/their thoughts on the attacks in downtown Jakarta.

Just FYI, the attacks happened a few blocks away from Merdeka Palace.

That was not a large scale operation.
They only intended to target some VIPs inside the Sarinah Mall. That's why in some picture published the gunner didn't blindly shooting bystander there.

It is supposed to be large scale operation, 6 bombs are prepared for the attack. Out of 5 terrorist 2 was blown up by their bomb prematurely. And they are unlucky enough to have SWAT team nearby. They might cause more fatalities if they delay their plan much longer.

There's recent news from Indonesia that 38 people arrested for terror offenses from a training camp were released due to weak laws.

Indonesian lawmakers are set to approve a counterterror law that would give police more powers to detain someone on terror offenses hard, including trying to recruit someone to fight for terror groups.

Actually, (based on our local news), it’s due to not enough evidence. From the report, they only found 5 airguns, 3 knives, and a bag with religious books and flag inside after the search, that’s it. Jamaah Ansharusy Syariah (JAS) as the group who did the “training” are denying the “terrorist camp”-claim and argued that they only did some Search & Rescue (SAR) and survival training.
