The April issue of Square Enix's Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine is announcing on Thursday that an adaptation of Riku Misora's Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry (A Chivalry of the Failed Knight or Worst One's Cavalry) light novel series has been green-lit.

Plot Summary/Premise:

There are modern-day magicians called Mage-Knights. Although Kurogane Ikki is a student at an institution that trains Mage-Knights, he has no particular talent in magic and is labeled the "Failure Knight" or "Worst One." Getting way less than average marks in the scorings, he was forced to repeat a year. But with the arrival of a new head of the institution, a new rule was created: knights whose abilities are compatible, as decided by the board, must share rooms and attend practice and training together throughout their school years to bring up their abilities to the max. It is a rule to implement the absolute verdict of ability.

Ikki’s roommate, Stella Vermillion, turns out to be a princess of another foreign country. Stella is a Rank A knight: the type of genius in magic who only appears once a decade. When Ikki walked in on her while she was changing her clothes, it caused a huge misunderstanding (since neither yet knew of the new rule) which eventually ended up in a duel between the two of them. The punishment (or as some might see it, the prize) of the losing side is Eternal Submission to the winning side.

Forced to live the same room and practice magic together throughout all their school years, how will Stella and Ikki’s relationship evolve?

This isn't as cliche as you'd think it would be. Check out the first volume of the LN and you might find yourself a bit surprised.

The premise is somehow questionable, I still don't know what is the purpose for the MC to enter the school in the first place. I do like the fact that he doesn't have any magic even if the way he stands out from others might not translate to a necessarily good thing. I hoped that he somehow might have a personality of a old school battle shounen protagonists without the post-modern traits that plague throughout him (like the Marty Stu trait, something I really dislike if it's taken to the extreme).

The checklist themes used in the premise is like a crossover of Dragonar Academy with Absolute Duo and the girl appearing in most of the novel covers is like a slightly different and otherwise mature version of Claire Rouge from Blade Dance of Elementalers.

I might watch it just for the fact I actually still love the genre since it is capable at delivering series about flawed yet admirable protagonists which we get every once in a while (Lord Marksman and the Vanadis, Trinity Seven).

Oh Goody - not just a formula LN, but a Nationalist wish-fulfillment one too. A priceless combo.

I've read few manga chapters and honestly . . . It was so soul-crushingly bland. The first meeting with the heroine was totally unbearable (how many times already we've seen "MC bumps into naked heroine and punishes him in retaliation" crap?), the very concept of the Mage Knight just seem trying too hard at "being special soldiers" and made up of overused ideas seen on million times already, the expository bits were especially cringeworthy how they were cramed in the dialogues of each characters. "Failed Knight" is a nickname grating on my nerves given how easily the MC trashes the ridiculously powerful heroine. And finally, i dropped it when the MC turns out to be having "tragic past" that's forcibly shoehorned into the narrative

I am still amazed by people who are able to tell how the adaption will work out before it has aired or know the premise without reading the source. I sure can't.

^ Let's not be ignorant about how web novels write. Besides, there's the manga as a basis for what to expect in the anime, and you can't really say that those who are cautious of this series are talking things out of their ass.

Mahouka already did it before and it was done in an almost unbearable way. Add to the fact that the MC practically had no flaws and is the very definition of Marty Stu serves as an insult to the injury for some people.

I have to note that not every light novel follows the same supernatural romance action formula, but there's quite a lot of them that got animated recently.

Here's I'll tell you why:

The next time a LN that have the word "failed" (or something similar) in it gets animated, I pray to god that the MC is an actually flawed character that starts as a wimp in honor of the series' title and then slowly develop his skills like the battle shounen MCs from the past. I might not like wimps or Marty Stus, but I'll take the former since they're flawed even if I don't enjoy seeing them over for being utter crybabies whenever they trip and fall over a cute girl or just run away from what would be seen as elaborate rambling against another person.

Then the title should renamed to "A chivalry of the badass knight."
