Hacking/Cyberwarfare
'Hackers' give orders to German missile battery:
"German-owned Patriot missiles stationed in Turkey were briefly taken over by hackers, according to media reports on Tuesday. The attack took place on anti-aircraft ‘Patriot’ missiles on the Syrian border. The American-made weapons had been stationed there by the Bundeswehr (German army) to protect Nato ally Turkey. According to the civil service magazine, the missile system carried out “unexplained” orders. It was not immediately clear when these orders were carried out and what they were." The Largest Government Hack Ever Is Way Bigger Than We Thought:
"When the Office of Personnel Management began investigating a data breach, it was already a dire situation, with 4.2 million federal workers’ information stolen. Then things got worse. And worse. During the investigation of the hack, the OPM found a second theft, the existence of which was first reported back in June. But today, we learned that this second data theft hijacked personal information from between 21 million and 25 million federal workers and contractors. That’s larger than the population of New York State!" See: http://gizmodo.com/the-largest-gover...-we-1716836634 =========================================== Second OPM Hack Stole Data of 21.5M People, Including Biometric: "The breach affects nearly everyone that underwent a background check through OPM in 2000 or later." See: http://www.defenseone.com/management.../?oref=d-river =========================================== Senator Sasse: The OPM Hack May Have Given China a Spy Recruiting Database: "When applying for a security clearance with the SF-86, applicants list their family members, neighbors, co-workers, foreign contacts, and even college roommates. What this means is that not only do the hackers know lots of sensitive information about millions of government employees, they also know a great deal about many of the people they know and love. The implications for threats, intimidation, and blackmail are chilling. “Oh, you don’t want to sell out your country? OK, we get it. By the way, your parents still live at 2911 Rainbow Drive, right?”" See: http://www.wired.com/2015/07/senator...ach-seriously/ |

Pretty much all user data at Yahoo was hacked:
"Yahoo on Wednesday disclosed a breach that took place in August of 2013 which may have resulted in data associated with more than one billion user accounts being stolen. This new, 1-billion-account breach is separate from a 500-million-account breach the company disclosed in September. At the time, the 500-million-account breach was the largest on record." The hack occurred in 2013, but was only discovered and revealed a couple days ago. There was another hack (500M account PWs stolen, instead of 1B) that took place in 2014 (suspected to be the work of China or Russia) and got disclosed in September of this year.
Yahoo! should've already asked you in September to change your PW, delete your security questions and whatnot. So if you already did that back then, you should be in the clear now. Of course, you can still once again change your PW if you want.

A hacker has leaked 10 stolen episodes of 'Orange Is
the New Black’ season 5 after Netflix allegedly refused to pay ransom: "An anonymous hacker has carried through on a threat to release “Orange Is the New Black” season five episodes online — after Netflix allegedly failed to respond to the cybercriminal’s shakedown demands. Variety was unable to verify the authenticity of the “OITNB” episodes the hacker claimed to have shared on popular file-sharing site the Pirate Bay. The first 10 episodes of season 5 were apparently shared shortly before 6 a.m. ET Saturday, with the 10 files comprising a total of 11.46 gigabytes. The hacker, who uses the handle “thedarkoverlord,” published the premiere episode from the upcoming season of “Orange Is the New Black” on Friday to the Pirate Bay." That Orange Is the New Black Leak Was Never Going to Pay Off: "It must have seemed like a safe bet, as extortion plots go: Steal a prized original series from Netflix and shake the company down with the threat of releasing it months before it airs. But the sudden appearance of season five of Orange Is the New Black on torrenting site The Pirate Bay shows the crime was destined to failure, because the people behind it misunderstand how streaming, and the internet, work today." Microsoft exposes Adrozek, malware that hijacks Chrome, Edge, and Firefox:
"Microsoft has raised the alarm today about a new malware strain that infects users' devices and then proceeds to modify browsers and their settings in order to inject ads into search results pages. Named Adrozek, the malware has been active since at least May 2020 and reached its absolute peak in August this year when it controlled more than 30,000 browsers each day. But in a report today, the Microsoft 365 Defender Research Team believes the number of infected users is much, much higher. Microsoft researchers said that between May and September 2020, they observed "hundreds of thousands" of Adrozek detections all over the globe."
