7/7/2015 Islamic combatants in Ukraine

Quote:
MARIUPOL, Ukraine — Wearing camouflage, with a bushy salt-and-pepper beard flowing over his chest and a bowie knife sheathed prominently in his belt, the man cut a fearsome figure in the nearly empty restaurant. Waiters hovered apprehensively near the kitchen, and try as he might, the man who calls himself “Muslim,” a former Chechen warlord, could not wave them over for more tea.
Even for Ukrainians hardened by more than a year of war here against Russian-backed separatists, the appearance of Islamic combatants, mostly Chechens, in towns near the front lines comes as something of a surprise — and for many of the Ukrainians, a welcome one.
“We like to fight the Russians,” said the Chechen, who refused to give his real name. “We always fight the Russians.”
He commands one of three volunteer Islamic battalions out of about 30 volunteer units in total fighting now in eastern Ukraine. The Islamic battalions are deployed to the hottest zones, which is why the Chechen was here.

These guys, IIRC from reading up on them, are secular nationalist Chechens.

US needs to learn not to fight who the Russians are having a stalemate with.

If you're referring to Afghanistan, the US primarily armed the groups that became the Northern Alliance, whereas the Taliban and proto-al Qaeda got their support from Pakistan and the Saudis.

Bin Laden also got support form the CIA.

Maybe the northern alliance got the majority of the support but that doesn't mean the others didn't get any.

I really don't know why the representatives of the Sunnis and the Shias don't do anything about their rampaging "brethren".

They didn't want to get killed.

It is said that "The road of Auschwitz is paved with apathy". It is the same on the side. The moderates and progressives refused to fight fundamentalism, allowing the twits to randomly quote phrases from religious scriptures to incite anger, take up arms, and try to roll the world back 2000 years.

These fundamentalists are giving Islam a bad name, just like how the megachurches are doing so with Christianity worldwide with their tax evasion and silly pastors.

You can't adapt all the time. And it is time for them to fight back and take back control of the international image of their religion.
