Eh, a bit disappointed at no Shimakaze in the final fight for this series. The battle was okayish I guess, kinda expected with some of the battle tactics they used. Interesting to see Taihou out there though.

I'm guessing the sequel will be a TV series but a movie is just as likely.

Sendai and Naka randomly going from zero damage (12:47) to critical damage (19:37). Naka is miraculously perfectly fine when they return to base (21:50)
There is absolutely no build-up for Fubuki's speech (11:27), she just randomly does it
Tone and Chikuma not firing a single shot AGAIN (they just disappeared in ep11 too)
Where the heck are Hiryuu, Soryuu, Nachi, RJ and Junyou? They are clearly part of the fleet (13:50)
Zuikaku's bow must be some ingame mechanism that I'm not aware of (08:28)

I'll admit while the last episode wasn't the pinnacle of great quality (a trait we could argue for the whole show), it's still all good fun. I had a great time watching the whole series. I guess I have lower standards when certain things don't bother me...

Y'know, like the part where my beloved Kirishima took off her glasses and got to be a complete BADASS and take out three destroyers at once, even though one of her lines in the game does mention she can't fight without her glasses. I just overlooked it because it was cool.

A lot of moments did make me freak out and squee, like Ooicchi's power of yuri giving her superhuman strength (albeit promptly ruined moments later), Nagato and Mutsu finally appearing in a battle (and now I ship these really hard, no pun intended), Nagato also beating the crap out of Abyssals with her fists and feet, and everyone epically converging for the final battle. I'll admit moments like these did carry the episode for me.

I'll admit that I kinda scoffed or laughed at certain things, like how Shoukaku and Zuikaku conveniently appeared because there were Instant Repair Buckets out of nowhere, our meaningless Admiral somehow being alive all along (and still concealed), and Ooicchi ruining her moment of badass by fawning over KTKM for over a minute, which is longer than the standard we usually see...

Anyway, I still had fun watching this anime overall. I know a lot of improvements could be made, but I guess it's not something I came in with exceedingly high expectations of. I guess the biggest issue to tackle in the next season would be to balance out the slice of life and the battles. If we had a KanColle anime focused on one or the other, I think we'd get better enjoyment out of it. Because this anime did try to stay balanced, but it steeply teeter-tottered back and forth between a war-anime and slice-of-life, a lot of times within the same episode, which can be kinda jarring. Hopefully they'll learn from their mistakes, take their time with the next episode, and come around the time we return to the Naval District, everything will be golden.

...If nothing else, just give me more Mic Check and Pan-Paka-Pan next season.

It's a minor disappointment, particularly the scenes where the overall mood is dampened by scenes that shouldn't have belonged there and the fact that Fubuki's resolution seemed less upfront that it should be, causing the entire story to feel as bland as our heroine. Sasuga to the production team, though. They manage to shove the concept of specific objectives as victory conditions in the anime.

Overall, I fully understand the difficulties behind making a story out of a game like this, so I'll give this show some leeway. It's not that bad unless you hate Fubuki, and those who watch the anime exclusively (and without doing any research, for shame!) have to consider the fanbase behind the show. The enjoyment value is definitely higher than Vividred Operation.

I don't want to watch that V-whatever anime then. Just to make it clear, I don't think anyone hates Fubuki. She's designed to be almost unhateable. I can even at least understand why she's MC. I just think she deserves better than this anime, that's all...

Thinking about it, the biggest plot problems with the anime from my perspective aside from the obvious pacing and ordering issue of the episodes are mainly the handling of Fubuki's development in the second half, Yūdachi's Kai Ni and the lead-up (or lack thereof) and aftermath of Kisaragi's sinking. Overall I think the general idea behind it all can work, but it was handled poorly by the direction and storyboard. So with that in mind here's something that in my eyes would've worked better:

1) Increase Kisaragi's role a bit in episode 2. A possibility would be that she was formerly a member of the torpedo squadron who got reassigned to free up the roster spot for Fubuki.

2) Instead of Yūdachi's Kai Ni popping up out of the blue, perhaps tie it in with a bit of development for Yūdachi herself in the aftermath of Kisaragi's sinking. Here I'm thinking about something like the formerly easy-going Yūdachi starting to take her lessons and training serious to get stronger after Kisaragi (in the setting that she was formerly a member of the same torpedo squadron) got sunk.

3) Handling Fubuki's development more linearly en bloc instead of having her first gain flagship status and a tremendous success saving Zuikaku and Shōkaku before getting all depressed about the Kai Ni issue and the recall to base.

To reflect this in the episode ordering and pacing something like this would've been possible:

Episode 1: Stays the same

Episode 2: Increase Kisaragi's role, have one or two scenes with the torpedo squadron. Perhaps have Mutsuki and her cheer up Fubuki in the light of her hardships.

Episode 3: Stays the same

Episode 4: Generally stays the same, slight changes in regards to Yūdachi, like showing her more serious during the classroom scene in the beginning

Episode 5: Curry episode, stays the same

Episode 6: Fleet reshuffling episode, stays the same

Episode 7: Fubuki's fleet - with Yūdachi's nearby as support - gets sent to MO. At MO they get ambushed by a surface fleet, Kaga takes a torpedo for Zuikaku and Fubuki loses her calm in the situation. Yūdachi's fleet shows up in time to save them. As a result of her performance at MO Yūdachi gets her Kai Ni. This along with her failure at MO causes Fubuki to fall into a slump.

Episode 8: Similar to some of the aspects of the actual episode 10. On a patrol sortie Fubuki nearly gets sunk. Mutsuki's upset at Fubuki for being so out of it. Akagi then is the one to bring Fubuki back to senses and Fubuki and Mutsuki have their little moonlight chat. It is then determined that MO has to be attacked again, with the fleet assembling at Truk later, and the fleet heads out again with Shōkaku replacing Kaga.

Episode 9: Similar to MO in the actual episode 7 with Fubuki saving the day. At Truk Fubuki gets her remodel. First part of Yamato episode.

Episode 10: Second part of Yamato episode, followed by the raid on the main base in the second half.

Episode 11-12: MI

No, it is the same seiyuu: Sakakibara Yoshiko. She also did the narration in episode 1.

There are two things I need clarification of to make sure I am not imagine things:

1) There was a bomb dropped on Akagi in the last episode at the end, right? Where did that one go at the beginning of this episode? I saw nothing of it, not a single screen of it being hit or missing Akagi or anything.

2) The Wo ship that Fubuki had hit in the head and left a mark, that one had YELLOW eyes, right? I am so sure that it had yellow eyes yet in this episode they were blue. What happened? I thought yellow eye Wo ships are elite whereas blue ones are normal, so did the hurt elite ship get a downgrade during the battle or what?

Overall this final battle felt pretty lackluster to me.
The Abyssal ships felt more like shooting targets and quite helpless, I even pitied them in this episode for literally being the punching bag of the shipgirls. But seriously, if over a dozen Abyssal ships just STAND around after surrounding two shipgirls and wait SEVERAL minutes without DOING ANYTHING while said girls are just talking and hugging and holding hands and literally WAIT till they fire their torpedos and do NOTHING TO DODGE THEM, then how can you even call this a goddamn "battle"?
This was not a battle, it was an overkill. And not a very enjoyable one too.

Also why did the Akatsukis show up? They didn't even fired a single shell from what I saw. They just stood around looking cute and talked as nothing is happening around them!

Compared to the magical girl parody final episode with the boys being battle lovers this final was pretty lackluster. While in episode 11 you had all the tension and shit happening and you were on your edge on the seat if Akagi gets hit and maybe sunk or starts burning and the girls are forced to decide to stay and fight, waiting for help, or leave Akagi to save their own lives in this episode all the tension was sucked out in the first two-three minutes.
Afterwards it was just a bore watching Abyssal ships standing around or driving around and getting destroyed to dozens while accomplishing nothing!
Even when the Airfield Hime for some reason evolved and regrow her limbs and what not, no tension could build up because the Abyssal ships stopped being a threat with all those shipgirls in front of them, killing them the moment they showed their heads above the ocean.

Oh well, hope the second season doesn't do such a "all tension and suspense gone, all hugs and jokes ending" again.
I don't wanna roll my eyes at the girls fighting their nemesis! I want to cheer on them and to win but for that there needs to be a CHALLENGE that feels like real danger not a all you can eat Abyssal ship buffet that does NOTHING to look like a threat!
I don't care if Hime can summon hundreds aircrafts and regrow her limbs if all her planes get destroyed in a single shell shot of Yamato and her body gets blown to pieces by Nagato!

Geez...

Oh well, I wonder what season 2 will be about, now that Fubuki is already living the dream. :P

This isn't really an uncommon trick anime studio use in general: they retcon slightly what happened in the previous episode to 1) build the cliffhanger 2) make the current episode "flow better".
Of course, it is bit too easy here.

You totally missed the FAQ explanations and the fact she had blue eyes back in episode 9.
Plainly speaking, the flagship wo class (with yellow eyes) evolved after being damaged by Fubuki and came back with her remodel form (blue eyes) when she raided the naval district.

It is not a bad adaptation

this mission reminds me about event
when you have to repeat the quest several times in order to sink the boss
so this time, you have to hit all the carriers before sinking the boss
I like the logic

I think they put too many Kantai in last mission. It should be fewer Kantai but more screentime for each of them.. Taihou's appearance didn't actually bring any significant development

Beside that, the tactic is really good and Nagato is a very good flagship + secretary ship
at this point, to be honest, I don't really mind if they didn't make any sequel.. but oh okay! They want to do it so let it be.. We might get more Kai-Ni in sequel
oh! I want more non-megane Kirishima... her Kai-Ni form should be megane-less.. looks more badass
and if only Shimakaze is a more cooperative kantai, I think we can remove the Akatsuki class DD from final battle.. One Shimakaze is enough as long as she didn't charge carelessly

last, I really hope Fubuki realized that she just sink "Kisaragi"

Did I miscount or did our heroes even had on paper a clear advantage? What a great recipe for a tense and climatic final battle.

Also great tactic by the abyssal, hime can't be killed unless, for some arbitrary reason, the three Wo carriers are killed first. So were to park them? At a safe spot far outside of the enemy's reach? Nope, right between hime and the enemy's forces. I know that the battles are primarily driven by plot, but they could have at least tried to give the illusion of tactic driven combat. The more I think about this episode the lazier it appears.
