Gensou Maden Saiyuki is 9 volumes because the mangaka changed publisher afterwards.

The series picked up with the new publisher and is called Saiyuki Reload. I'm not quite sure how many volumes are already out (at least 1, maybe 2, I think).

As for Gaiden, I think it's supposed to be 2 volumes...

Currently, there are:

9 volumes of Gensomaden Saiyuki
3 volumes of Saiyuki Reload
1 volume of Saiyuki Gaiden

Saiyuki Reload is a continuation of Gensomaden Saiyuki. The series was renamed because Minekura Kazuya changed publishers. Saiyuki Gaiden is a separate story of sorts: it revolves around the 4 main characters' previous incarnations when they were living in Heaven.

There are artbooks for each TV season, the movie and the OVA. There are novels as well. And there are artbooks featuring Saiyuki art called Backgammon (3 volumes) and Salty Dog (2 volumes).

Hope that helps. ^_^
