It's a series, premiering 2022. Experienced if not hugely impressive staff.
I know nothing about the manga, really, but with the state of things these days any seinen is at least small cause for hope. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/new...emiere/.176797

Btw, is the name "Yukihira" always has some association with food, diner & restaurants in Japan?
This is the second example that I know where a show is using the name "Yukihira" for food business-related anime after Shokugeki no Souma.

In Shokugeki, the Yuki in Yukihira is written using the Kanji "幸" (kou) which means happiness, fortune or luck. In Deaimon, the Yuki in Yukihira is written with the Kanji "雪" (Yuki) which means snow. So no, the name has nothing to do with food, diner & restaurants. By the way, the Hira both is written with the kanji "平" (hei) which can mean ordinary, peace, or average.

I get the worry about it going all Bunny Drop on us. Although even if it did, it wouldn't bother me as much as that one did. And I'm really not too worried. The ending and even preview seems to be setting up actual love interests for Nagomu. So things between him and Itsuka should remain pretty familial/parental.
Regardless, this was a really solid first episode. I like the dynamic and personalities of the two leads. They both have strengths and weaknesses and they make sense. It isn't like the MC just hated what his family but came back entitled. He caught part of a conversation (that probably was way more than he heard) and felt rejected. That his family gave up on him first so he found something else to get passionate about. He still came back when worried about his father's health. Itsuka is in a good spot for growth too. Of course she started out really disliking this guy because she basically overlapped her feelings about her father onto him. But didn't take long for her to at least get to understand him. That he didn't just abandon his family, even if he did run from it. She's still looking for her father, but doesn't know how to rely on others. But she works hard and there's no shame if she did end up inheriting the place. I really enjoyed the first episode here.

Best of the new series (i.e. non-sequels) so far by a wide margin. Like the setup a lot. The style used fits the content and particularly the location where it is based (Kyoto).
Good chance of following through this series to the end of the season's run. |

The best first episode in my list for this season (which not many, I admit).
Felt like something amiss about the design, probably because Kyoto-ish anime tend to have detailed character design compare to simple ones here.

The sweets look really good, and it's a nice cozy watch.
Btw, I had a nagging suspision that the dad who abandoned Itsuka was Nagomu's senpai who he learned the guitar from but I guess that's not the case?

It seems to point that way as the most obvious because the guitar and the flashback showed her father with the same hairstyle and color, just a little older. Too obvious so let's wait and see. Love the chapter, it was so wholesome and besides that it looks like there is going to be some romance too. |

Looks to be a fun series. Kind of worked hard to give the hero a reason for leaving that would make it not look entirely like “screw you guys I want to do my own thing”. Like, why not just have him be a slow learner or some misunderstanding happen that leads him to feel like the place is better without him? Something besides “the idiot cries with every sale like he’s saying goodbye to a daughter”.
As for the Bunny Drop risk, I think I can take it. Like in “If it’s for my daughter”, it doesn’t look like the girl’s going to look at him as any kind of parent. I hope not though. Not because I have a problem with it, but just because for once I’d like to see a story where the girl grows up and still sees the guy as a dad or brother. |

Usagi Drop worries aside, this episode really was a strong opening to the series. We get a lot of questions regarding Nagomu and Itsuki, and some impressions that hopefully would be challenged throughout the series.
One heavy impression was "the effects of being left behind". Nagomu was left behind by his departed grandfather, one he considers to be his hero, with a heartbreaking statement revealing that he thinks that Nagomu should pursue something else aside from the wagashi business he had loved since childhood. Meanwhile Itsuki was left behind at a young age by her father one day, seemingly pursuing his own dreams over his daughter. Gotta say, Nagomu's heart seemed strong enough to manage his school days and his short band stint without it truly breaking. On the other hand, Itsuki's heading towards a potentially self-destructive spiral after having her childhood ruined early on. Considering that we have Reiko Yoshida handling the series composition for this series, I can safely say that the story is in good hands. We can also expect some emotional moments based on how the story is setup. Not sure if my heart will be ready for it.
