Thanks for this thread Solace!
Anime version for reference: Walled City (General Structure) There's one more diagram (which shows some hill-ike version of the city), but I can't find right now. Jan-Poo's excellent analysis of the city/country's size shouldn't be forgotten either: Quote:

They got cannons.
They need guns with higher caliber Build hot air balloons and bomb the shit out the Titans Build land mines outside the perimeter...Not rely on the walls... Iron gates with spikes Boiling oil for crispy Titan skin... ..and not some fart producing machine.... |

Their technology in their arsenals are severely lacking for their needs for an effective combat performance.
Need a better quality blades. Need mortars. Need flamethrowers. grenades and Molotovs. And also Gatling-type cannons or machine guns. And how about the Glaive Thrower? Besides, by looking at the trademark 3DMG, do I get the impression that the author could be a fan of Tribes universe? Last edited by Xero8420; 2013-04-25 at 05:13. |

For me, all its function of flying and 'skiing' makes me think of Tribes. So maneuver that even a typical ninja could hardly cope up. But hey, maybe Spiderman could be the one inspires this tech too.

We have only seen two types of cannons and one of them (moveable but weak) were shown to be ineffective and at best only good at slowing down a Titan. The bigger more powerful ones on the walls obviously more for defense.

It seems to me your not looking at the tech from context of Shingeki no Kyojin's world, but by ours. Weapon development historically in the real world required many wars, tons of resources and various countries copy-cating each other then improving on the imitated tech to get where we are today. In Shingeki no Kyojin, humanity has been reduced to mere handful of million with practically every other country destroyed as far we know. Humans are limited in what they can do here due to lack of materials, which means they have to fight an extremely powerful foes while being as cost efficient as possible. Answering the question about the plausibility of the 3DMG in real life:
The machine itself in my opinion wouldn't be impossible but it would be very impractical to use in real life. For one the harpoons wouldn't have a 100% chance of attaching to any kind of surface, and considering how the 3D maneuvers work, a single failure would mean death or severe injuries. Moreover it is impossible that they would detach so easily after that with a consistent reliability. You would experience a lot of "jams" that would make the soldiers become sitting ducks for the titans. Another major issue is the human ability to be so quick and precise in shooting, detaching and moving while using that equipment. Again a single error would most likely mean death and they have no protection whatsoever to falls or accidental collisions against obstacles.

I don't believe how the Titans are killed is not much of a spoiler.

Cannons aren't completely useless against titans, else they wouldn't even bother with them. Each gate is well protected with dozens of cannons, and that is for a reason.
The main problem is that you can't effectively use cannons on an open ground.

I think spoilers are allowed as long as they are in spoiler tags?
Limited resources or not, one should hope that they didn't actually sit on their butts for 100 years, developing absolutely nothing more effective than the 3DMG, thinking that it'll all work out :s They had enough resources and technology to build and maintain a gigantic wall, it's not like their technological level is medieval, it should've at least been possible to improve existing tech ( couldn't a high caliber firearm type weapon do what they currently do with blades a lot more efficiently? They already have the rudimentary technology for it). Not gonna lie, my first thought when I saw their tech and how sadly inefficient it is was "did no one think to at least Claymore-fy (read: bioexperiement on) these people?" I guess episode 2 hinted that this was actually done though. We'll see...!? |

And the cannons are weaker now because of regression in technology of being occupied in the wall (which is implied to certain degrees).
