Some more info has trickled out recently, so I think that's enough to warrant a new thread!

So yeah, the newest OP flick, Film RED, is closely approaching! As the title implies, this one revolves around Shanks of the Yonkou/Four Emperors! Or more specifically, the relationship between him and the newly introduced character, Uta.... who's revealed to be none other than SHANKS' DAUGHTER!!!! She's a world-famous diva, but the trailer seems to imply that she may be an antagonist, if not the main villain. What mysteries surround this newly revealed offspring of an emperor? We should find out this summer, as Film RED releases in Japanese theaters on AUGUST 6TH of this year!

Judging from the two toned hair, Uta has half the color of her father which would imply that the other half is that of her mother whoever that is.

I bet Uta isn't even Shanks' biological daughter, and that Shanks will have limited involvement in the story (basically only in the flashbacks).

^I think there's a 50/50 chance that Shanks and Uta are related by blood. I mean, the idea of him having a grown child isn't all that far-fetched considering that A. At least two other emperors have children of their own (three if Weevil is really WB's kid), and B. It's already strongly implied that our carrot-topped friend had a kid with Makino, so who knows how many other little redheads he could have brought to the world during his days sailing the seas?

I hope we get a movie with an entertaining story like Strong World or Gold and not another Stampede which focused more on cameos. Never felt like rewatching it.
Illustration designs look very good so far (except for the usual waist and breasts exaggeration).
My main concern is finding a new cinema which will show the movie. The one I watched the last movie in didn't survive the pandemic.

Shank's daughter? I mean, a looooooooooooong time ago, there was the implication that Shanks and Makino had a Thing... but I'm not sure enough in-universe time would've passed for her to be a teenager or older. Of course, if this is non-canon (as most of us expect it to be), then that part doesn't matter.

Makino is 31 years old right now.
Shanks gave the strawhat to Luffy 12 years ago, so Makino was 19 at that time.
Uta is definitely older than 12 though as she was seen to be about 7-8ish years old with Shanks still having the strawhat. That age estimate is based on her height, she was half a Shanks tall in that scene.
So Makino was like 11-12ish years old when Uta was born.
Shanks is 8 years older than Makino, making him like 17-18 at the time of the impregnation.

I would like to point out that there is 0% chance that Makino would be Uta’s biological mother. Otherwise Uta would have green hair instead of pink/white/lavender to go with the red hair she shares with her biological father. It’s all in the genetics.

I'm surprised there's very little talk about this movie anywhere... but all things considered, If you've seen any of the other One Piece movies, it's really just another one- nothing super-special, though some gorgeous movie-budget animation and action scenes along the way. Also, it helps to be a fan of Ado for this movie. In fact, I suspect that Oda IS a fan of Ado (can anyone actually confirm this?) and this was how he decided to fit her into One Piece.

Now, as much as I liked Uta, you do have to consider she's at best a pseudo-canon character. Not to mention, she's supposed to have this major backstory connection with Shanks and Luffy... and of course, there's been zero mention of her for over 20 years (for obvious reasons). So, how do you handle this kind of character in a manga that's already overflowing (and especially after the recent Yamato decision) with characters?

Also, Major Disclaimer: My Japanese is still improving and I missed and/or misunderstood the details, so take the nitty-gritty stuff with a major grain of salt. But, let's get slightly more detailed:

Spoiler for Film RED:

The movie can basically be split into three acts and an epilogue. The first act is Uta doing a pop concert and "reuniting" with Luffy; more accurately, it's Luffy recognizing her. We get a flashback of how (according to this movie) they met as kids and had a competition; Uta also has a sneaky trick on how she beats Luffy. Anyways, she says that Luffy should quit being a Pirate... and you know what kind of answer THAT will get. And since she can;t convince Luffy and the crew with words and songs... she has to do it with force. Basically, her power is that with music, she can create all sorts of things. She can creat (what seems like) and infinite army of flying soldiers; and once she captures someone in her conjured music notes, she can stick them on a music scale that they (at first) can't escape.

The second act is all about showing showing off Uta's power, and plus the songs continue. Uta is pretty OP... and then we find out what's REALLY going on: we have two realities! Also, there's a pink-and-red mushroom that's important, but I didn't understand what the details on it are. Anyway, the reality where Uta is OP is actually just a dream-like world; everyone at her concert is actually asleep! I will also say the Marines and even the highest levels of the WG get involved... hell, our favorite love-to-hate Celestial Dragon (Charles, i think?) even shows up. Even though it's clear by this point that Uta is the antagonist of the movie, I can't help but love that she also punches him away. Now, Uta is doing this to try to make everyone happy; it's the old question of "do you let people have free will but also let pain and suffering occur, or you basically force them to be happy by constraining what they can do?" Luffy and some our our other favorite characters- specifically Law, Barty, and even Coby with his crew are running with Luffy to escape Uta's spell in the dream world.

Also, Uta exists as a good reminder that for all the things the Straw Hats do to help people... normally, pirates are evil bastards. We learn that Uta wants to bring happiness because as a child, she was very much alone on an island growing up, until some sort of Den-Den Mushi washed up on shore and connected her with the outide world. Uta was always a talented singer, so when she made contact with others, she sang for them... and in the process, learned about the evil deeds other pirates have committed across the world. So, she wants to eliminate pirates and bring happiness with her music. On top of this, Uta has a memory of a time as a child on the island of Elegia, where she got introduced to other musicians and high-society life. The problem is, just as she had fun that day... she wakes up during the night to see Elegia on fire with destruction all around, and Shanks' crew- who brought her here in the first place- are sailing away from it. So, Uta believes she was deceived by the red hair Pirates, and that's where her hatred of pirates began.

Now, to further complicate things... a song Uta sings has ties to a musical demon of some sort, and it has the power to warp worlds (again, missed the details here). The more Uta sings and wreaks havoc in her dream world, the closer this demon comes to being free. Even worse- Uta starts going into a mental breakdown when her fans start to realize that they're being help captie just so that Uta can find a way to make them "happy". Add in that Shanks is on his way in the real world- which WILL defeat her- and she loses it. The next spell she casts turns any character caught in it into various cute inanimate objects. Side note- in this dream world, the Thousand Sunny has been turned into a cute fox-like creature.

The third act is Luffy being determined to stop Uta and save her from possibly being taken over by the demon. We also learn the reality of the night 12 years ago, when she was abandoned by Shanks: the demon was, in fact, released: I believe it stays dormant inside Uta. Anyways, during that event where she went into the party/high society, somehow the demon managed to get just free enough to create sheet music for Uta to sing. This means that later that night, the demon took over Uta's body and destroyed the town, and of course Uta has no memory of it. Shanks of course defeats it, and decides to take the blame... meaning he has to abandon Uta, since the power would still rest inside her.

The final act... as Luffy attempts to srop Uta, he still can't beat her in her dream world. By the way, I have to wonder how true in the manga the way she beats him in the movie is: we know that if Devil Fruit Users fall in the ocean, they can't move; and we know (via the Crocodile fight) that getting hit with water for Logia-types seems to temporarily stop their power. But (as o this movie) Luffy is a paramecia... and yet just throwing water (admittedly enough to soak him) stops him? I'm not sure how canon that is, or if it's just for this movie. Anyways, in both the dream world and reality, Uta is about to kill Luffy and stab the Straw Hat (side note- she did take it from him because of its connection to Shanks and overall how important it is to him)... and of course Shanks does a Big Damn Heroes moment. Between Shanks, the Marines, and seeing someone actually get shot in reality with Uta unable to do anything about it... she ends up summoning the demon. And IT is super-OP, being the source of Uta's strength. Turns out, the only way to beat it is defeating it in BOTH the dream world AND reality- this is where we basically see everyone work together to take it down. It's also how you get both the Straw Hats and the Red Hair crew working together without actually meeting... and some of the marines are in here too.

Anyways, after some amazing action and everyone throwing everything they have at the demon... it DOES go down. The epilogue is when we find out there's another problem: even though the demon has been destroyed, the people in the dream world aren't waking up. I'm assuming that this is because so long as Uta is alive, they'll be trapped in the dream. So, Uta gives one last song, a song of farewell. This breaks the spell at last... and that's when we get the teo BIG things about Shanks: first, he drives off the Marines (two Admirals included!) with his own Extremely OP Haki, as he declares Uta his daughter. We then find out... yeah folks, Uta ISN'T his biological daughter! They do share one major thing in common though: Shanks finds Uta in a treasure chest after one of his adventures... and apparently Shanks was also found in a treasure chest by Roger's crew! Meanwhile, somehow everyone has left the island where Uta was performing, and Luffy wakes up... once again, not meeting Shanks. But he sees Shanks' ship, and possibly through Observation haki, realizes what's happened to Uta. And thus the credits roll.

Through the credits, we see many of the places and characters we've met throughout One Piece listening to Uta's songs and CD... so there's your product placement. And the last scene is Luffy on the Thousand Sunny, as they remember Uta one last time... before Luffy declares he'll become King of the Pirates.

Went to watch the movie in a local cinema today, the movie exceeded my expectations easily. Among the top 2 of my One Piece movies. I went in without knowing any spoilers, except that there would be a few songs.

The CGI and animation quality went up a lot from Stampede, there are still a few scenes where CGI is bad, but it is not during the main event of the movie, more among the background stuff.
Despite so many characters, most got enough screentime to feel like a good addition, though of course the characterisation for Straw Hats suffered from that. There is only so much one can show within 2hrs.
Still pretty well rounded story.
The songs were versatile and pretty fitting for every occasion.

A lot of first time showing in the movie, might not have been planned to show all that there.
As for Shanks appearance, it was enough to not be disappointed.

Only thing that might bother people could be

Can recommend this movie to One Piece fans and those who like anime in general.

Gerard07 Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2016	Seen the spoilers of the movie on YouTuve; Spoiler: a bit of Shanks's past is revealed and how he met Roger, and it seems that we will see his crew fight (that's good), also it seems that Luffy will use the G5 and in the end it seems that Uta dies in the arms of Shanks (but the movie itself is not kanon right?, so Uta could appear in the manga).

Rocks could have done the same thing Roger would later go on to do with Garp and entrusted his son to him. __________________

Also, I would argue that Uta's biggest problem is daddy/abandonment issues- I think it was on these boards that I saw someone say the Red-Haired Pirates could also be called the Deadbeat Dad crew. The whole premise of the movie, and I'll give more details in another tag, is that Uta HATES pirates and wants to make the world a happier place... by eliminating pirates. Of course, we can't have that, and she's pseudo-canon at best... and we'll never see her in the manga unless Oda decides to pull a twist suprise on us. Spoiler for What happens to Uta: Basically, Uta creates a Big Mess, and has to give her life to fix everything and really save over half the characters in this movie. That's how you handle a character that should be super-important but only appeared for this movie: make the movie about them, but ultimately kill them off at the end. Granted, I read a spoiler about this, and so I wasn't hit so hard by her death. Hoodspirit Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2009	Went to watch the movie in a local cinema today, the movie exceeded my expectations easily. Among the top 2 of my One Piece movies. I went in without knowing any spoilers, except that there would be a few songs. The CGI and animation quality went up a lot from Stampede, there are still a few scenes where CGI is bad, but it is not during the main event of the movie, more among the background stuff. Despite so many characters, most got enough screentime to feel like a good addition, though of course the characterisation for Straw Hats suffered from that. There is only so much one can show within 2hrs. Still pretty well rounded story. The songs were versatile and pretty fitting for every occasion. A lot of first time showing in the movie, might not have been planned to show all that there. As for Shanks appearance, it was enough to not be disappointed. Only thing that might bother people could be Spoiler for BIG Spoiler for the end: Luffy couldn't keep his timeskip promise again. Can recommend this movie to One Piece fans and those who like anime in general.
