So, I have to admit that this episode is essentially like the OG's 3rd episode. It's not really a bad thing, but critics will probably rip the episode as a carbon copy. One vast difference though is that at least it's not playing up the do-or-die situation with the school at stake and at least there's an audience at the start. What was surprising though is partway through the song when it got interrupted. Didn't expected that, but didn't expect the ensuing follow-up when the song continued on.
Onto our characters, we have Mari making a proper introduction! SHINY! Our crazy semi-foreigner makes her grand entrance via helicopter during our trio's practise session at the beach. Also we learn she's the director of the school. "Huh?!" "How?!" and "The school is saved!" is what was going through my mind. Plus she gets all chummy with Dia. It's also confirmed that the 3rd years do have a special connection, and it seems like Kanan may be hiding something more than what Dia is hiding. Lastly, best girl also shows us why she is best girl with her charm skill by converting other neighbouring school girls to the "Yousoro!" cult.

Mari's appearance this episode is awesome, loved the way she just popped out of that helicopter. She's got a slight perverted personality as well lol
Yohane's disguise is also so obvious. The girls' idol outfits looks great, very colorful and nothing too flashy. Their brief performance was okay but I do expect some improvements later on.

Love Live! Sunshine!! has now officially started. There's no do or die situation for this episode 3, but while the sun prevailed through the storms it's clear there's some dark clouds hanging over the 3rd years. Mari is uniquely eccentric and a lot smarter than she lets on, and we find out just a little more about Ruby and Hanamaru before their proper introduction next episode
What Dia said at the end will need to have lasting impact later on so this episode isn't the start of a string of happenstance. Maybe. I have to remember the school isn't in danger but "Director Mari Ohara" makes me wonder... Quote:
damn right it's better than yours~

I have very mixed feelings over this episode. Very mixed.
I'm probably going to have to think on this one a lot before I come to a firm position on it... if I ever do. Clear-cut positives - You was great, excellent episode for her. Mari's helicopter intro was cool (but I'm not quite as sold on her character as a whole). Clear-cut negatives - Incredibly fast pacing. It would have been nice to see the full dance/song performed uninterrupted... My immediate reaction, ratings-wise, was 8/10. So I'll give it that.

I don't know what that midnight cats mean but I enjoyed the episode. Thoroughly enjoyed it. From Mari's unexpected entrance, okay, partially unexpected but when the helicopter was focus and stay focused, I'm already thinking on who's rich girl would come out of that one. She is also smart with tricking the girls to easily agreeing though she might have her own reasons. Its also possibly connected to the other 2 3rd years. Dia and Mari is obviously know each other. Did those 3 participate in love live before Mari move out? They are giving hints in that direction.
Love You making the girls follow her and also Yohabe's disguise isn't really a convincing. Reminds me awfully of Nico... okay, snap out of it. I'm trying to not compare it the first series but some similarities are just there. Love the ending concert but my heart breaks when they start crying. I didn't expect for the song to be interrupted. I'm expecting for the local people to visit. That's just the way with rural setting. People doesn't have much to do so they have lots of free time to pass. Enough to visit a local concert. With lack of entertainment, having a local idol group perform would interest them. But I really didn't expected the electricity to be cut off but its nice when Dia had come to help them by bringing in the generators. I didn't expect her to do it but its nice of her. She is also adamant in stopping them but she still helps them. There is really something here... well nice episode. 9/10/

I hope hope hope hope we get more Kanan screentime. When Mari mentioned that she heard rumors of a school idol group forming, I questioned where on Earth she would've gotten wind of it. It couldn't have been from Chika, You, Riko, and their immediate circle of friends and family. It couldn't have been Dia either since this seems like the first time they've seen each other in 2 years. So the only one left is Kanan. She's obviously got some connection to her. Whether it's a relationship of animosity or estrangement, I'm dying to know what happened with the 3rd years.

This episode foreshadows a potential problem with Sunshine as a whole: copying too many of the story beats of the original show. With the way they rushed out a live concert in the third episode that had some similarities with the live concert in the original's episode 3 (all the way down to the student council character confronting the trio after the live ends followed by them making a moving speech), it makes me worry that the staff might be trying too hard to ride on the original's coattails.
There was no obvious indication from Sunshine's episode 2 that they would have a live concert in the next episode. The idea of the live performance was introduced, developed and concluded within the span of a single episode. I was hoping they'd have a live performance in episode 4 to properly pace the plot, so I'm a little disappointed by how they rushed the live performance out this quickly, *particularly* with the big implication that the staff is trying to copy the original anime's beats down to the episode structure. Right now I feel like there's someone in the staff who is going, "We MUST have a trio song and dance at the end of episode 1 (even though Riko hasn't joined yet!) just like the original, and we MUST have an important live concert and the end of episode 3 just like the original!" I think it's good to take some of the first Love Live's strengths and apply them to Sunshine, but not at the cost of the story or pacing it properly. As a person who likes the first LL to a ridiculous degree, it's impossible for me to judge Sunshine completely as a standalone product when some of the staff is trying so damn hard to parallel it to the original. I'm curious to see what newcomers to the franchise think about this episode. With all that said, I still enjoyed this episode a lot. Mari is fun as hell, her swooping in and practically buying out the entire school was an entirely unexpected development and she's a thoroughly entertaining character so far (gotta love that cute Engrish). And while I was a bit distracted by the copied story beats, there fortunately *were* plenty of things that made this episode stand out as something new, like the aspect of inviting guests from outside of town, Chika's sister helping out in an awesome way, and the whole power outage thing (god bless Dia for saving the day there). So while the excessively similar story beats do bother me, there is still an indication that the staff is putting effort into making Sunshine its own great thing which is nice. |

The thing is - and this bothers me because I accepted that Aqours were their own thing and not Muse copycats - they're basically playing with expectations of those who still have not accepted Aqours. That's who the episode is aimed at. That's why they subverted almost every callback to the original to shut up the haters.
I'll only call the biggest subversion. I might actually be reaching a bit too much with this one, but... this is not Start: Dash of Aqours. It's their No Brand Girls that went right. It also might become a trigger for Yohane's joining Aqours, by the way, although I'm not sure if they'll go for it. And there is probably a dozen of subversions on smaller scale which I'd rather not list. I don't want to write an essay here, you see. So, back to the main point. I'm a bit hurt. This episode is not aimed at me, as a fan of Aqours. It's aimed at haters to slam the door in their faces. I might be overthinking it, but that's what I take from the episode itself no matter how enjoyable I feel it is. |

Mari comes off as eccentric, but she is no doubt smarter than she looks.
Yohane's disguise is terrible. You did a great job converting those girls and turning them into her fans. I also still find myself liking her friendship with Chika. She knew exactly what to say to get Chika fired up. I actually sort of like "three mermaids" as a name, even if we know there will be more than three of them.

On the bright side, Love Live Sunshine could end up being a beautiful homage to the original Love Live.
There are elements of possible subversion here, but there's also plenty of signs of homage. Certain quick moments in this episode vividly resemble similar moments in LL Season 1 Episode 3. Chika's love of μ's also comes across as very sincere and deeply felt in this episode. "Our goal is to become like the school idols, μ's!" - Chika (this moment itself vividly reminds me of a Honoka moment in Season 1 Episode 3). I'll admit this Chika moment resonated a lot with me. There's something very cute and touching about how much Chika admires μ's. Sunshine is clearly inspired heavily by the original Love Live. There are different ways to look at that. It doesn't necessarily have to be negative. This is, in fact, why I feel very mixed feelings on this episode. My heart is telling me one positive thing, and my mind is telling me a different negative thing. But this is a franchise where the heart tends to rule, so...

Mari Ohara's formal appearance is so "SHINY~!!!" While I like how she has her goofiness from the Drama CDs, I can't believe that she's the chairwoman of Uranohoshi Academy!
Now then, seems that Aqours' first performance somewhat mirrors that of μ’s. Of course, there's some hiccups like power outages, but luckily they found backup when Mito Takami brought in the crowd while someone brought the generators to power up the lights and the sound system (I believe that it's Dia Kurosawa). With that said, looks like Chika and her friends make a successful live concert! |
