I thought the balloon incident is mostly humorous, Americans predictably seething because they want to shoot a harmless balloon...cmon let's just shoot it!!

But then I thought about it some more, and maybe balloons are actually the new meta?

- Can potentially manuever anywhere by going up/down to catch air currents
- Can potentially loiter for weeks or even months
- Can get better images than satellite
- Can carry variety of munitions
- Hard to see when it's high up
- Hard to detect with radar
- Cheaper than a Patriot missile

to monitor and collect intelligence on a Chinese government surveillance balloon
during its recent trip across parts of the continental United States and Canada. An
F-22 Raptor stealth fighter finally shot down the balloon with an AIM-9X
Sidewinder missile off the coast of South Carolina on Saturday, and efforts are

- The aerial surveillance program is indeed run by the PLA.
- The spy balloon effort operates in Hainan province.
- These surveillance airships have been spotted over five continents.
- A briefing was given on China’s balloon espionage for some 150 people from about 40 embassies. Every US Embassy received “detailed information” on the espionage that can be shared with allies and partners.
- US officials have begun to share specifics with officials in countries such as Japan whose military facilities were targeted.
- In recent years, at least four balloons have been spotted over Hawaii, Florida, Texas and Guam.
- A Chinese spy balloon crashed off the Hawaiian islands last June. This yielded information, including the nature of the technology China is using.
- Some of the balloons are outfitted with electrooptical sensors or digital cameras that can capture highly precise images. They also are equipped with radio signal and satellite transmission capability.

"Renowned geopolitical analyst Peter Zeihan recently made a startling
prediction during an interview with commentator Joe Rogan.

Zeihan believes that China's collapse is imminent, with only 10 years
remaining before potential disaster. The crux of his prediction lies in
his assertion that China has misrepresented its population numbers,
leading him to estimate that the country's actual population is lower
by 100 million than what the government has officially reported.
