Well you see, I've never read or watched any .hack series, I've just started watching .hack//Roots, so do I need to read or watch any previous .hack series to understand the story of this manga? Thanks

Ummm... it's actually a novel. And it's based on the games too, so get it if you've never played them. I might pick it up myself maybe.
The games were the central part of the first .hack series, so you should be fine reading it w/o any previous knowledge of the series. |
