"Zenpen" suggests it will be a reboot in complete form. Please Goc, get Akitarou Daichi back for this.
Literally one of the first anime I ever watched once I knew what anime was. Borrowed (on VHS) from the library.

Honestly, this was the anime that made me fall for Horie-san as a seiyuu. It's almost unimaginable that anyone else could play the role, but well... None of us are getting any younger, are we? If they re-cast I'm OK with it, but I would hate to see anyone but Akitarou direct.

Supposedly she said she's OK with a new adaptation, as long as its not Akitarou again. |

And given that original creators legally have the final say on major decisions, she can exercise that authority to ensure a new director faithfully adapts her manga to a T, warts and all. |

Wow. I just recently finished the entire manga and loved it, but was hesitant to try out the anime because they hadn't finished the story, but a new animation that adapts the series in it's entirety sounds right up my alley .
I know there were Drama CD's with VA's for the rest of the Sohma's and other characters who appeared past the anime's stopping point, but I am kind of curious what they'll do for the voice cast. Could be a Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood scenario... I've never actually heard Hocchan as Tohru but I understand it's one of her most iconic anime roles (not that she's really lacking in those), and I think her voice has aged fairly well, so she could probably still do it (along with the other VA's). Probably a better chance then Laura Bailey coming back when it eventually gets dubbed .

I am kind of curious which studio they'll go to for this. I'd be surprised if they went back to DEEN, but they'll probably go with a studio with some pedigree and experience with long-runners (because properly adapting the entire manga will, at minimum, require a 4-cour).
I wonder if Bones is too out there... I wouldn't count on it considering she's passed away .

I remember that Fruits Baskets fans were so desperate to see a new anime. I hope this news makes their day!
I'm eagerly awaiting the adaptation to anime of volumes 7 to 23... There are so many epic shoujo manga that I'd love to see receive this treatment too, like Tenshi Kinryouku and Karekano. Feels like way too few of them receive complete adaptations. Edit - Oh, I just saw that there's a new manga called Fruits Basket Another currently serialized, no wonder they went forward with this anime.

I remember once that Funimation organized a fan petition to convince the studio to create another Fruit Basket anime by sending a thousand origami birds.(I like to joke that the studio did receive those origami birds... and use them as recycle paper or fuel for the fire.)
Well looks like it finally work.

Hoooboihooboihooboi!!! Was dreaming of a continuation of this for over a decade until I just made my peace with it some years ago. I bought the Funi DVD on a whim when it was first released, without knowing what it was, and as I watched it, everything about it was so captivating! How they managed to go from silly off-the-wall antics, then double-down into something that managed to tug at my heartstrings, on some occasions near-instantaneously, was what made that show unforgettable for me =03(my username for all these years for a reason). The energy they put into the dub was also one of the most stellar in its time for me.
Alas, I've never read the manga though, despite my love of the anime series, shame to say =01. This'll be a good time to see it in its actual form(as I also recall someone mentioning the anime took certain liberties). Hopefully, director aside, it can still capture all of the charm of the 1st anime series.

I wonder how they'll handle the pacing if they do make a new anime? What made the manga work so well is that there were only one or two characters that Takaya-san focused on at any given time, and she would often swap between different characters with each passing chapter and so I'm worried that they might not be able to maintain the same ebb and flow when translating those chapters into 24-minute long episodes.
