We know that, but there are a lot of people, including myself, who believe that the next Speaker of the House has to be someone younger and more energetic than the battle-weary Nancy Pelosi. People voted for a shift to the left, so there is nothing wrong in getting in a younger politician who can push that agenda hard when people need social security, healthcare, and other measures that protect the average Joe.

The real problem is we're still in two separate camps where anything proposed in the opposite direction of the other camp will have them howling bloody murderer in response.

Bipartisanship? Anyone remember what that looks like? As I sure as heck don't.

Bring back Eisenhower

Expand access to the ballot box
Improve American education
End gerrymandering
Pass something like the 2013 immigration bill

As the race for MS Senate shows, the after-effects of the Civil War persist to this day. Younger people show greater tolerance, at least in surveys, so demographic change will help. White evangelicalism is also slowly on the decline.

Monied interests are another big factor. End donor anonymity. Overturn Citizens United. The ability of Democrats to finance recent campaigns by relying on small donors and renouncing PACs is a good omen.

You forgot media reform. Or even just bringing back that thing that Clinton killed that basically enabled Fox and the like to do what they've done.

You need to do something about "alternative facts"

But than again, people prefer to be reassured instead of being told uncomfortable facts.

Which has more appeal? "The stock market made historical gains" or "There's a war on the middle class going on"

Less sensationalism in the news, more facts, and perhaps accountability in the media.

Sensationalism is needed if it's the right kind.
Something like "benghazi" isn't.

On another note, it seems the media has more or less tried to forget that we're all probably going to die in 20-ish years.
edit: I mean, phrasing it that way as headline would certainly make people panic, (but it's true)
but we do have a serious problem that has been once again, confirmed by recent the National Climate Assessment report.
It's fact that's going to upset a lot of people, so the media must either ignore or downplay it.

I would say than the media should go back as a source of information instead of entertaiment. Profit as the mains motive for the existence of said media do not help as well.

I'd like to see the media go back to being an objective unbiased outlet of accurate/truthful information. Assuming it ever was in the past 30 years rather than being in the pockets of either the Republicans *cough*FoxNews*cough* or the Democrats.

There were some old timer holdouts in the news rooms in the 1990s, but most of them retired by the 2000s.
