I'm more doubtful that the writers didn't intentionally make sure their strong heroine wasn't so strong or self-willed that she would turn off some male viewers. Whatever their intentions, they didn't produce a heroine whose independence and freedom from traditional gender roles was particularly great.

I mean, she's literally inspired to be a Shojo manga Heroine, I don't think she was really thinking about conforming to gender roles so much as she wanted to find cute romance .

Well, it was quite unfortunate that the first few episodes of the series caused a very polarizing opinion from viewers. The series as a whole was more balanced than the obvious running gag in the first few episodes, and the secondary cast gets their own moments to shine. I also don't see anything wrong with the characterization of Izumi and Shikimori. If anything, Episode 11 should be enough to justify why the two are a mutually beneficial couple.
Hachimitsu is best girl/gramps/guitar/detective/slime/athlete. ENTRY #458 GET.
