I like how this series tries to explain magical constructs in a traditional sense. I'd like to stick around for some developments here.

Also, there's an argument in some distant place about whether or not this is a battle harem. How those guys think it ain't one, I wonder why. Maybe it diverges from the usual formula, but seeing the first few scenes makes it so like it is one. It's got most of the things in check:

A nondescript guy mentored by some old hag(no offense to Celica)enters a highly advanced magical institute where most of the students are girls, then he gets challenged by a haughty mistress, usually from some high class family. Then other girls show up.

So, yeah. Insights on this?
More of the problem children/excellent students are female. The student ratio isn't that skewed towards girls.

Okay... Still, it has elements for a battle harem, and that's what I'm asking about. If there ever was a point, it still stands.

I am pretty sure Sisti, Lumia and sword girl all like Glen. So there is no problem calling it harem.

Does someone here knows how did the episode fare, in terms of pacing and such?

Pacing was... fast. Duel took place on first day in anime where in novels it was up to weeks before Sisti finally snapped and threw gauntlet. Everyone having this cartoonish comedic high tension speak also made it feel much like watching it on fast forward.

That said it's just matter of direction, than actually messing with content. Imho there would be no point covering less material in first episode than it did.

If there was nothing of much importance of this portion of the volume, then I guess it's justified.

Agreed. One thing for sure, the anime's definitely giving the series a boost so far, the LN VOlumes are topping Amazon Japan right now (link: https://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/bestsell...b_5_2220015051)

There is another factor, look at the price of the volume and that Ranking shows just the initial sells, to know if is indeed giving a boost the best thing to do is checking after a week or Oricon rankings.

Does the LN have enough fan service for the anime, provided it doesn't stray too far off from the LN, to be fan service-heavy?

Not sure where one draws line, but Rokudenshi has much less fan service than for example Trinity 7 or Hagure Yuusha. Take it as you will.

Well, those 2 are ecchi to the core. Especially Hagure which is more or less boderline hentai

Not really?

The source material is tame enough that the anime baring the girls midriffs caused a bit of a stir when it happened.

Yay, new chapter of novel translation is out. For while I was worried it's dead, but thanks to saint Jerome it's fine after all.
