For those that read the Beatless novel, why did Lacia remove her ownership device? I understand it was in response to Arato’s confession but why did she feel the need to remove it? She can’t “love” him back so to speak; it can’t be a declaration of love.

Arato’s confession was unexpected for Lacia and gave her a new understanding of humans that informed her answer about the relationship between humans and AI. Her removal of her ownership device was a gesture of reciprocation and commitment.

It was always her intention to switch owners to the one that would best help her achieve the purpose Higgins tasked her with. Arato was a temporary owner in her plans and she orchestrated the circumstances that would give her the opportunity to switch.
