Shieldbro is pretty dark, I don't think the "demographic" would be into a story like this. They want comfy stories to self insert to, the only way an anime would work is if it was an art first adaptation instead of a 12-24 episode commercial. Honestly who cares though the LN's are selling great, the story is waaay improved and catering to the anime fans would only effect the story negatively.

Not dark as in theme, I'm talking dark as in the first 14-17 episodes will be Shieldbro getting screwed over then spend the rest of the story fighting a losing battle against the waves and other heroes.

Quick question to those willing to answer, should I read the wn first, or is it more advisable to read the english ln first?
I ask, since I had this on my reading back log for a while, and now that its a little better, I was wondering which would be a better read.

Hard to answer. The Web Novel is fully translated and complete, so you can enjoy a full story. The Light Novel is currently up to Volume 7, with the current volume having come out just less than a week ago.
Basically the Web Novel's benefit is being complete, *cough*and free to read online if you're willing to look for it*cough* while the Light Novel is more polished and has an expanded story and has better pacing.

I didn't claim that it changed her characterization, and the subject was about her design so I cant really ignore visuals and costume. Her personality can still be exactly the same, but the LN screwed her design in overhauling it to have that pure Japanese aesthetic. The Kimono clad Katana wielding Tanuki Miko is a far cry from the Armor wearing Hammer swinging Tanuki Goddess, No? Are you seriously going to tell me that you think the LN version is a complete improvement and doesn't have any sort of cliche attached to it? |

Was being extra respectful sounding like that? From your firm unwavering opinion, I simply assumed that you know more about the LN adaptation seeing how critical you are about it seemingly adding from the art visuals. Seeing how apparently most of us here have yet to read through it, I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt or hear out more info regarding the LN version's choices & changes & the overall impressions from the updated plot & characterizations so far. The updated story could very much improve or at the very least justify what we're seeing which again circles back to my post you originally quoted how its more likely that there's "more to the LN version & not just 'japanophile cliche's". Personally, from the visual art designs of their gears & looks alone w/ no regard to whatever plot background thing related to them or if they'll ever change back to what they look etc.etc., I'm liking it.

A question by a LN reader who hasn't yet read the web novels (I'm fair at reading Japanese, but not great enough to read pure text like in a WN). I don't know if it happens in the WN but the LN implies that along with an initial party, Motoyasu wound up picking up a lot of young new adventurers over and over who always lasted a short while before the main party members... dealt with them. What I want to know is, if this was in the WN or someone has read all the LNs, do these girls ever show up again? I don't mind seriously messed up situations happening from time to time, but I really hate the idea of a character being created for the sole purpose of being hurt and violated to demonstrate the problems with other characters. Not to mention I think it'd be interesting for the jerk to wind up having to face them at some point. If anyone knows, a PM is fine but please let me know.
As for anime, we can always hope. I don't think it's as bad as some are suggesting. Yes, Naofumi's life in the other world is really crappy for a long time, but for all the crap he has allies that stick to him and trust him with all their being. Not to mention that he proceeds to earn love and respect even fairly early on. Yes, the first one or two episodes would have him getting piled on from all sides. But then you'd see him steadily making friends and earning admiration, and not only would these look all the bigger for the persecution preceding it, but it would also mean more because the people that admire him and love him aren't doing this because he's a hero and they expect him to be worthy, they do so because he EARNED their love and admiration. Yes, you'd have a lot of dark, but it's the dark of a starry sky, and the lights shining in that dark are really a great sight to behold. From what I've heard, this is certainly popular enough to make a profit for the animators. I just hope, if they do choose to animate it at some point, they come up with a better way to portray Raphtalia's growth than what we got in the LN and manga. Maybe have her appear little but sort of flicker, or maybe people seem to be looking over her head, or windows and mirrors reflect a much more mature self, so that the audience is clued in that something's up but the fact that he's basically hallucinating isn't given away so blatantly. Let us see things from his perspective for a bit rather than thrust on us the fact that his perspective is wrong. |

In the WN the various female party members that Motoyasu attracted were stated to have been "driven off" by bullying from Bitch and "Woman #1" who's name Nafoumi can't be bothered to remember. It doesn't go into detail on how they got rid of the various girls, whether if the girls left the party voluntarily or if Bitch.....disposed of them like shown for one girl in the LN.

No they're happy, they're just gods I would assume them leaving copies of themselves to bring happiness to existences like Melty, Atlas and the other girls like the mole, orca and other slave beasts and having families with them makes them gods of benevolence and balance. Personally I didn't like the ending of the WN it became too, too, convoluted and an overly fantastical power trip, though I liked the way he pulled it off to make it a happy ending, but imo the whole god elements and otherworld elements were too much.
