Hirai's designs are the Okawara formula. They look like shit on paper, but the differences are more apparent in animation because there's only so many character designers that can emulate Hirai's style. Which is why the character faces suffer some inconsistencies at times. Most of the animes he designed the character suffered this. SEED, GSD, Fafner, and S-CRY-ed all had episodes where "Is this Hirai?"

For all the weakness Hirai has in his character designs, I love his clothings design though.

Personally I think not drawing in "the" anime character is the most basic requirement for character designers. I wouldn't call any illustrator/designer without his/her own signature (recognizable) style professional at all... I mean having your work recognized is one of the most important thing in the art/applied art world.

Imo, Hirai really didn't ultilized a lot of technique that help make their character more differentiable, such as variation in face shape, eye shape, body type (come on, we can have a over weight or flat chest character once a while

All characters fall into the same "ideal" anime character body type) , and posture.

I mean... just look at Stella and Cagalli... there are scenes where you practically can't tell who is who if you do not know the context of the scene >.>;

I recommend looking at bleach for good character design, it's a huge caste and yet you have no problem recognizing one character from another. HxH and Death Notes are also good example as well.

And honestly I find Hirai's casual wear to be pretty horrible >.>; what's with shinn's outfits >.>; and GS's Athrun's shinny yellow turtle neck with maroon trenchcoat (wince)

You know you liked Kira's "Miami Vice" outfit.

And seriously, I like Hirai's style of drawing but dude does make all his characters look the same. That was totally GS Lacus with purple hair/red eyes on that site a couple of posts ago...

BTW, I say "GS Lacus" because in GSD both Lacus and Kira underwent minor changes due to a slight shift in Hirai's art style. Lacus getting a double shot of "babe serum" complete with longer, more tousled hair (clearly evident in her "Moon Goddess" dress) and a less rounded, more defined face/body, and Kira getting longer, more spiked out "badass" hair and less rounded, more angular face.

Here's an example (in spoiler tags to save space), for those who are curious:

Well, the reason I say it would be an art atyle shift is because Shinn is drawn the same way, even though he's as young as Kira/Athrun/Lacus were in the first GS.

I like hirai's style ... sure his chara's are similar and the hands are sometimes strange ^^ ...
but of all GS and GSD pictures (not to forget the eipsodes he was art director) I like the ons of hirai the most.

beside, I think his art in Infinite Ryvius is quite different
and it would be bad if the characters in GS looks exactly the same in GSD ... its an age different and imo it was felicitous.
