And I like both of them! Besides, the "older" Robotech 'heathens' probably already know about the Macross universe since I'm sure that they were curious where the original footage came from... (and more than likely own both Robotech and Macross DVDs) |

As much as I understand the Robotech/Macross Hatered.
You have to admit, that Macross will probably never get license in the US because of Robotech, and as such, we will never see Macross as Macross in America. Which means it will never get licensed. |

Just for the shits & giggles, let's consider a happy ending scenario vis a vis Robotech / Macross.
For the sake of argument, I'll put it this way, Macross is the true Robotech. What I mean by that is, I had vivid recollections of the SDF portion of Robotech, fond but vague memories of the Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross section, and very hazy memories of the Genesis Climber section being kind of bad, annoying, and generally less interesting. (the transvestite lounge singer? the extremely annoying red-haired girl? ugh) I think that'd be true of most non-anime fans who grew up with Robotech as that one, different, supercool cartoon. If you showed them the SDF Macross with english overdubs, they'd just say, awesome! That's the supercool show I used to watch as a child! Memories of the other two would be less clear and less fond. So... to most, Robotech is simply the English word for Macross. They don't know or care about Shadow Chronicles. They will say "WTF is this MACROSS???" (but what they really love IS Macross!) If you like, you can embark upon an education campaign regarding the licensing, the splicing and dicing, copywrights, lawsuits, the macross universe vs the robotech universe, the sub-universes, etc etc. By then they will think of you as the comic store guy in the Simpsons and have walked away. So... my most realistic unrealistic happy ending for the Robotech/Macross conflict is: Warner Bros buys up or negotiates all rights. Robotech is killed dead, dead, deader than Elvis. Macross is then marketed, true to Macross canon, but under the Robotech brand name and using old Robotech terms and names whenever it will not harm the characterization, plot line, etc. Macross is now released in the states using the name Robotech, maybe they redo the original series staying TRUE to the original series with updated graphics as a Saturday morning or after-school cartoon. With that established, the hounds are released and all the various Macross products and shows are released to the US. Now, consider that Warner Bros is going to do a movie that sticks to the original SDF Macross. If it is successful, then they are at a crossroads. There are clearly two different storylines and products extending away from that original movie... the Robotech line, and the Macross line. Which one is the superior product? Exactly. Macross is clearly, vastly superior. So at that moment, after the first Robotech movie has been successful, but before a sequel is in the works, there will be a strong motivation for Warner Bros to throw their weight around, buy up whatever rights need to be bought, and bring in Macross. |

Dunno Wildstar this is where the whole Intellectual Property rights gets into the picture.
The original storyline, mecha designs and characters has been ruled as property of Big West and Studio Nue. Harmony Gold can't redo a Macross storyline movie without getting lawsuits on their asses. Ergo either Warner Bros pays Big West and Studio Nue their due or stop the production due to the legal mess. |

(Disney in particular is infamous for doing this, Tezuka's Kimba the White Lion -> The Lion King, Gainax's Secret of Blue Water -> Atlantis). Hollywood being hollywood, character and mecha designs will almost certainly be altered beyond recognition (like the Transformers movie). And most of the character names have already been conveniently changed to protect the guilty. Although the character "Lin Minmei" may be a problem. If HG redefines the Robotech movie for use in referencing their canon backstory and characters, and relinquishes their baseless claim to the Macross trademark once and for all, it may even be in BW's interests to let the movie fly. They're banking on MOSPEADA/Shadow Chronicles for the Robotech franchise anyway. But somehow I doubt that will happen. Also, reinventing the backstory YET again is likely to piss off their already diminishing fanbase. Last edited by glyph; 2008-08-28 at 11:53. |

It didn't stop anybody making lawsuit though.
For example George Lucas made a lawsuit on the original creators of Battlestar Galactica during its run. It being close to his pet Star Wars. Now the irony is his company ILM was also the FX guys of BSG. |

While that is true, its original producers did consider MII to be in the canon.
Then again, thats why you watch it last. Although I'd place ZERO before Macross: SDF, but I guess visually, you'd want to watch SDF first. - Tak

Highly doubt it. Kawamori was not involved in II, and he doesn't like II one bit.
It has been considered a parallel development by official sources as well. Moreover, rumors would suggest that Kawamori himself has plans for that specific timeline... - Tak

Well to me Macross II is based on the DYRL timeline.
And the PC Engine games Macross 2036 and Macross Eternal Love Song are between them. Quote:

Well u don't really have to hate robotech since they are presented without their own will
HG is the one to blame for the greed they have And shadow chronicles are as good as transmorphers in terms of gfx IMHO, no where near the quality of the new Macross TV series let alone the movie they are doing now |
