Suruga's DVD cover must have been influenced by BL covers. That setting and pose is exactly what the seme would look like on a BL novel/manga/anime.
Reading BL in such glorified pose is a perfect win to me... Bakemonogatari has beaten Haruhi first season sales. Should we all celebrate? Quote:

Keep in mind that even if Bake Vol 1 finishes at around 60,000 it's avg could fall down into the 40k range. There is usually a big drop off from Vol 1 and the rest of the series, as you can see comparing these first vol sales to the avg sales they did. Macross Frontier Vol 1 = 64981 2008/07/25 30,239 Vol. 1 (Three versions of Episode 1) 2008/07/25 34,742 Vol. 1 Code Geass R2 Vol 1 = 59041 2008/08/22 39,907 Vol. 01 (One episode) 2008/08/22 19,134 Vol. 01 I think Bake won't get affected as much as usual though. |

And it's not too healthy to stick with Oricon data: a lot is missing (look at BD sales, or older titles) and the chart system may be tricky, especially for DVD sales. Last but not least Oricon doesn't cover the whole market, I know for sure is around 60% for manga distribution, but I've no idea of video department: Kodakawa declared to have sold, one year after commercialization, 800k of Suzumiya Haruhi's DVD (100k for volume) while Oricon figures are a lot lower. |

From my experience with video game and music cds (video game and hiphop sales are serious business!) when companies talk about figures it's what they have shipped and not actually physically sold. You see stuff like that new Batman game has sold 2 million copies worldwide but when you look at sales figures it's nowhere near that. It's sold/shipped 2 million to retailers, same when music cds get certified platinum in America, they've have sold/shipped 1 million copies to retailers while they have only sold 800,000 etc. Also UFC claim their PVPs sell around say 500,000 when they're rumored to do around 150,000.. some companies exaggerate... I'll be surprised if Kodakawa aren't doing the same thing... though it clearly doesn't make up for all of the 60,000 gap between Oricon and their figures.

And in my experience not even NPD or Chartrack cover the 100% of their assigned market. Overprinting in a niche market like anime may be fatal, of course they are probably boasting but the difference is to wide.
Other case I remember are: Aria (Natural and Animation) 20k for volume (the data is from the fusion between Mag Garden and Production I.G.), Gundam Seed Destiny was around 120k average and Bandai declared (over) 100k copies for Geass R2 (Vol. 1 and 2) and Macross F (Volume 1) and a total of 800K for Geass first season (DVD only). For example I know Oricon get the data from Tohan for the Manga Chart, which is the main distributor but not the only one (Taiyosha for example should cover around 30% of the market). Thats where, probably, most of that difference lay (that and the chart thing, where title may sell something but are not counted). So yeah! A serious business! |

Well, technically aren't the publishers selling their products to the retailers, who then sell them to the customers for a markup? From that point of view, shipping things to stores does count as selling them. It's just that the stores get to return the unsold ones for a full refund.

Third week (approximate). Source is Mainichi Shimbun and Impress. Last week's DVD is below 30th place in overall rank, so no actual sales yet.

I guess this is both good news and bad news...Amazon Japan has informed me that their initial shipment of the Bake 2 BDs is insufficient to fulfill my order. The good news is that it's selling well, but I won't get mine until Oct. 30th at the earliest.

On another note, the case for Hitagi Crab is pretty nice.
