IMO manga looks are "too" roman like, as if they were actually "romans that got upgraded by fantasy elements". I think the anime is better in that regard, actually making it generally look more like a "fantasy nation that has a few similarities with roman designs".

I can't argue Hamilton. She is the exception that proves the rule.

But we're going to have agree to disagree on the fact that manga Rory > anime Rory. Though outside of when she's in her demigoddess livery, the two designs are basically identical. Tuka is probably the least different, though.

Well, I've been saying for years that Jim Butcher's Codex Alera is the perfect candidate for turning a Western novel series into an anime/manga. This is the closest I've gotten to seeing that, so I'm biased in that respect.

And for all we know, they are "Romans that got upgraded by fantasy elements". This can't be the first time that the Gate has been opened...

Personally, in terms of the character designs, I generally like the manga designs better, but there are some expections.

For instance, I like the anime look of the emperor (BTW anyone else think he kind of looks like (a slightly younger version of) Tywin Lannister from Game of Thrones? The similar appearance definitely matches the similar personality of the two characters) a lot better than the generic old emperor look of the manga.

Pina is doing her best to not to make any relations between Japan any worse than it already is, in addition, so those drawing filled with those same-gender loving books from that world must be her further enjoyment in the future.

How about not using imgur since none of the images are loading (and in other cases that site runs pig slow).

Actually same sex relationships were normal in Roman times albeit with a weird double standard(The Seme were praised while the Uke shamed). Also there this from the HoYay entry in TVTropes for Gate:

So it's not a farfetch to imagine that Pina and her female knights may have..."comforted" each other.
