Russia has signaled intent to end 'current phase' of invasion, cut losses with Kherson referendum: expert:
putin desperately needs a win to brag to his followers and to hit the pause button on the invasion so that he can rearm his army and train troops. Of course he will also demand a total rollback on western sanctions and to be paid by Ukraine for all the equipment lost in the "special operation". The best thing to do atm is for Ukraine to re-take Kherson in the short term, or at the very least cut the russian army supply lines so there can be no "referendum" (reads as farce). |

It could happen, if the living conditions in Russia after regime collapse aren't as dire as they were in the 90s. Back then, the western strategy for rehabilitating Russia was sending in the "Harvard boys" to turn the country into ancapistan and hope that things magically sort themselves out. This time it would be different, involving massive bureaucracy and economic aid packages. I have serious doubts whether the West could rally enough resources for it to work, though. Plus things would be further complicated by Chinese soft power.

If there is indeed a coup underway to remove Putin, then Ukraine committed a major mistake by revealing it to the whole public. It's one of the reasons why I think it's just the UA intelligence service messing with the Russian government's heads and hoping to stoke more paranoia amongst themselves, and trigger more purges.
That said, the military purges and infighting can't be good, especially if Putin is driving both. History is full of instances where generals turn upon their leader once a certain turning point is reached or paranoia is raised to its paroxysm. One well-known case would be Aurelian (214-275), a very remarkable Emperor who hauled the Roman Empire back from the brink of collapse and strengthened it...only to be murdered by his own generals who thought they were about to be purged for corruption. Spoiler for plot twist:
There are more modern cases like Claus Schenk von Stauffenberg, who grew disillusioned with Hitler and feared that Germany would lose soon, and thus (unsuccessfully) tried to kill him with a bomb (as the starting shot of the infamous Operation Valkyrie) or the attempted coup of the Turkish (laic) military against Erdogan and his party, which failed because of a lack of popular support. It should nevertheless be mentioned that Putin still has a lot of supporters, many of whom have thrown their full lot behind him and cannot back down anymore, and he's spent the last decade setting up a slew of additional homeland security organs and military entities (like the Rosgvardia) to thwart the possibility of usurpation, perfect his hold on society and bolster his repressive options. However...and to be fair, it would still be wise to remember that, back in the Roman Empire, the Praetorian Guards were as much remembered for protecting the Emperors...as they were for betraying them and sometimes even auctioning off the Empire to the highest bidder (see the case of Titus Sulpicianus and Didius Julianus). Anything is still possible when the monopoly of (and access to) power is at stake. ... Of course, this greatly hypothetical and much hoped-for coup needn't be an actual uprising with tanks and mobs taking to the street. It could be something gradual and subtle with Putin slowly being removed from the public eye by his subordinates and one day dying in his bed from "complications to a heretofore undetected case of cancer". ...You know, of the 9mm type? Novichok would be a stroke of cosmic irony, but well, I think I'm asking for too much. One can only hope, though, but I'm not crossing my fingers for it. Russia has a tendency to disappoint in this matter.

Call me a pessimist, but even if there is a coup d'etat or putin becomes so ill he becomes bed ridden, I highly doubt the person taking his place would be another Gorbachov. Just like JFK assassination didn't end the Vietnam war, this conflict will only end when russian troops are expelled from Ukraine for good and that is going to take months.

I have no doubt he hasn't been having good days lately, but we've seen it before - the media hungrily jumping on rumors of certain leaders' declining health, only to see those not pan out. Remember all the hoopla we made about Kim Jong-Un being overweight, having bad knees and essentially standing at Death's door because he didn't show his face for a couple weeks or months? They did it again with Shoigu - they claimed he had a heart attack because he was not seen on Russian TV for a few weeks after the start of the invasion, when things started getting comically wrong for the Russian troops.
My concern is that writers and video makers like to overblow things for the sake of getting easy clicks. God knows I've already had enough of all those YouTube channels with robo-voices relating the latest Ukraine news and either hyping up statements (e.g. The Sun's "Ukrainian tank single handedly destroys massive Russian convoy east of Kyiv" video...but you only see that lone UA T64 scoring one hit on a single BTR and missing another shot, while the rest of the Russian column just speeds away in alarm, shooting in every direction), inflating numbers or getting details (wrong weapon models/names, showing utterly unrelated stock footage et cetera) plain wrong. Accuracy and truth often take a backseat in favor of more visitor clicks and higher ad revenue.
