I brought this up in another thread similar to this, but I read on wikipedia (not always true, I know) that Monster was going to have a live action adaptation by the guy who directed "A History of Violence" (John Olson, I believe). I also read a profile on said project on imdb.
I really think that this is a movie that can succeed (at least critically) in Hollywood and the US, and movie execs/hollywood businessmen looking to adapt anime should look past adapting action-oriented, shonen fare that are more easily recognized by the casual American anime fan or non anime simply to make money off the license, and try to find material with substance. I mean, if done right, a film with a premise like Monster's could definitely be oscar-worthy. |

Monster shares superficial similarities to The Fugitive, so it's not hard to imagine it as a Hollywood production. I've heard about the movie rumours, but given the lack of updates, the project has probably been shelved indefinitely?

Hollywood's track-record for adapting anime to live-action has been rather poor so far.

IMO nothing - it will never change. There are too many intractable causes for why Hollywood takes on anime fail. Maybe once in a decade or generation a fluke will happen and someone will make a good one based on individual brilliance and stubbornness.
