(An hour ago, the comment function seemed disabled, and now the comments are there just fine again. ) |

Well, AYB was a somewhat international thing thanks to the spread of English around the world and while the ultimate suckiness godliness of Cheetahmen II was known in the US before anywhere else, it was just ahead of its time and is now only experiencing a long awaited revival although it's just limited to within Japan.
Who knows how long the boom will last, although there are already tons of clips on it... you can find the good ones on youtube as well. Personally my favourite is http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1372220 Cheetah Men II - Main theme vs Rene Ablaze - Autumn again (jason van wyk remix) ... I guess it's a foreign remix done some time ago. There's other nice remixes available which are done by non-Japanese from some time back. Of course you have to expect them to make the usual anime-song mashups... and personally speaking I really LOL'd at Motteke Sailor Fuku: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1363698 (it's crazy how the beat fits) and the ingenious http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1361974 Marisa wa taihen na (etc) mix which actually has lags just like the original recording of it! Amazing. Quote:

Sorry for bumping, and this is more than a week late but ZOMG Jam Project officially collaborating with Niconico?!!! And Fukuyama-san admitting in a video he is a nico-chuu. WTF! This is really awesome stuff. I think they even mentioned (not by name but just referring to) how people make IdolMaster videos and fill up the screen with red words during MAKKA NA CHIKAI and so on... well, I'm glad they actually don't mind people doing this even if it's copyright infringement.
I wonder how this turns out!

You have to go to smilevideo.jp to upload stuff. Then click on the 新規の動画アップロード link (I think it says something like that). It takes some time to upload but don't go anywhere... it will say you're the #th person in line to wait for the system to process your stuff; then you wait for it to process (as always try uploading in .flv when possible, so they don't take eons to re-encode it) and you'll come to a screen where you can pick a thumbnail (randomly generated or input a time - the latter never worked for me), and write the title, description and put it in a tag category if you like.
I just read on the official blog: http://blog.nicovideo.jp/2007/11/post_201.php that, if I haven't misunderstood, there's an upcoming movie where the rights holders have very surprisingly decided to allow niconico users legal access to some footage from the movie so that they can create videos around it (I'm guessing MADs and the like) and upload it to niconico! Of course there's limitations; they say the offer can be stopped without notice and videos that damage the film or the actors' reputation or spoil the movie fall under deletion guidelines. Still, wow - I think it's the first time I've heard about anything like that in the Japanese industry. Awesome, really awesome... legal MADs. Cool! I really hope to see more of this perhaps. It'll be really great to see more Japanese creators embracing this medium. edit: Oh, and it's been some time since the Cheetahman boom was over but I cannot go without pasting the link to this amazing remix: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1477242 Mellow, lounge music (is that the right term) sorta... How far has that game BGM gone?! I would listen to this quite willingly as if it was a song aired on radio or in a CD. I lol'd at the comments "give it in .ape!" Hahah, yeah, I'd love a lossless version of this... By the same author there's http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1488790 Cheetah Girls, a more synthy version with female (programmed?) vocals. Wow I feel like I'm posting half the posts in this topic. But I just wanted to mention another landmark (?) in niconico's history, a recent series of popular videos that I actually like a lot:
MIDI anime! MIDIs that are played through this music software called the Music Animation Machine (http://www.musanim.com) that display it in coloured bars. Not unlike music box scores, I think... But what this guy did was to create pictures out of them. For example, continuing on the Cheetahman fad that was mentioned above, this guy did the themesong and then added "Cheetah!" and "BOSS ->" in words, and added ~ (supposed to be the worms snakes worms), and 勿 which was used by the users as a representation of Apeman, the pathetic final boss. (He looks like that kanji character, if you don't get it.) And then he made music out of it, like this: http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=DLTRylm7QRU He has made the following videos: 1. Cheetahman http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1415681 References mentioned up there. 2. Mario medley http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1430475 If you've played Mario you'll recognize the elements. 3. Kirby medley http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1458358 Stars, trains, "KIRBY", Kirby the character, what appears to be a boss character.. 4. Okkusenman + Airman ga Taosenai http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1487881 "7" is because the popular versions' lyrics are those of Ultraman Seven. レモン (lemon) is a pun off the "demo~" part in the lyrics, which sounded like レモン when sung by a popular niconico singer, Gomu (notice it's one of the earliest videos on niconico) The hurricanes are because of Airman. 5. FF4 medley http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1506976 Carrot, music notation, chocobo, Meteo... what else? 6. retro game medley http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1544163 Tetris, Doctor Mario, the Gradius games (notice the levels!), Donkey Kong and Pacman. Awesome! And the best part is that the author of the Music Animation Machine software has talked about it here http://www.musanim.com/niconicodouga/ It's made my day! Talk about recognition, this makes me really happy for the video creators...

By "click" I'm assuming you mean "right click" no? Here's a list of what I get in Mozilla 2.0.0.11 Back Forward Reload Stop - Bookmark this Page... Save Page As... Send Link... - View Background Image Select All - View Page Source View Page Info Properties Nowhere on that list is "Edit Site Preferences"... I also look up on the top bar in File, Edit, View, etc menus and nothing matching that exists there either. |

Actually I figured for me it's become easier to just open the video in IE 7, wait for it to fully load and then copy the .flv from the cache... I've been trying a number of tools for Firefox but they kinda stopped working. Anyway I only rarely copy flvs so it's okay for me.

Know where I can get programs to convert vids to flv format? I think I know one but I can't remember the name of it.
BTW, how do I mark comments in my submissions as NG (No Good) and have them deleted?

To delete comments in your own videos, on the line below the tags next to two buttons there should be a red link 【コメント編集】. Then you tick the checkboxes next to the ones you don't want. I don't think it deletes them, rather it makes them invisible when you normally play the video (unless you are the owner?) so it allows you to un-delete them, sorta. Don't forget to click the 完了 button on the bottom right hand side of the video screen. The NG system is different, you can use it on any video you like, either by telling it not to show all anonymous comments, or block certain users (if the user is going anonymously it'll block their hash, which changes after some time), or block by keyword. There's also a wordfilter option that you can use on videos you created. Not long ago they unveiled new developments that were tested publicly - there's new commands that let you conduct surveys and it automatically tallies scores for you (say you ask "Do you like Mikuru (A), Haruhi (B) or Yuki (C)?" and respondents type in A, B, or C - there will be a live counter overlaid on the screen that tallies the results within a certain timeframe) And another one that lets you cover the video in black except for a "window" which can be moved based on the user comments (type うえ and it goes up, etc) I don't really see the point of this. Then there's one where if you type the correct phrase, you will get sent to another video (but you can create a wordfilter for that word so others don't guess what it is... although if you go to sites like nicosen I think you can see the words before they were filtered EDIT: I think it stopped working) And finally they also showed a setting that disables commenting for the video (you'd wonder why they didn't have one all this time). I don't know when they'll finally appear in actual videos or whether it's still limited to premium members or what...

Compilation Niconico Douga, or 組曲「ニコニコ動画」. A collection of various songs into a 11 minute stream of non-stop otakudom. You lose at life if you recognize each and every one of these songs. Anyway, I find it interesting enough to post a series of videos.
The original 組曲「ニコニコ動画」 with images to help you recognize which is which 650 Japanese singing the compilation all together. Spoiler:
組曲「ニコニコ動画」 Version J. The compilation sung by a guy. Rather good voice, too. Spoiler:
組曲『ニコニコ動画』 Ver nayuta. By a girl. She seems to do a good imitation of various seiyus. Spoiler:
組曲「ニコニコ動画」 featuring 初音ミク Special-Edition Ver. By a bunch of folks on niconico (including J from above. Not sure about Nayuta) + Hatsune Miku. Spoiler:
組曲『ニコニコ動画』涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱版. Acting out various scenes to the tune of 組曲『ニコニコ動画』. Haruhi sounds almost identical, Mikuru sortof, Yuki also feels similar. Spoiler:
組曲「ニコニコ動画」 ひぐらしのなく頃に ver (Warning, Higurashi, Higurashi Kai spoilers). This time acting out Higurashi. Rena in particular sounds the same. Spoiler:
大合奏~組曲『ニコニコ動画』 Ver7.0. Symphonic version. Spoiler:

If you searched for "組曲「ニコニコ動画」" and ordered it by submission date you'd probably find it, woudln't you? http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm500873 (and it's been quite some time now...)
A massive (by niconico standards) 2 million views and nearly just as many comments thanks to the amazing comment technicians (shokunin) who have done amazing tricks and feats with the most simple comment system. Look at the surge of amazing talent displayed when the original video hit 2 million views: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1525748 It's really quite amazing, but there's even better stuff out there (I saved a few to my my-memories thingy) HashiriyaR32: What exactly do you mean by the nice boat treatment? I don't remember any stunning displays of landscapes and wonderful watercraft, but they've always been replacing deleted videos with their own short clip explaining that the video is deleted for what reason (copyright holder's request, admin deleted it, or user deleted it) EDIT: I should obviously look before I open my big mouth You're right! It IS nice boat! Well nice call on that, admins, but I'm still pissed off you deleted the great TV放映OPAnimetion MAD sakuga video because of "unsuitable contents". Damn you!

Well one of the deleted clips was given the nice boat treatment (footage of cruise ship in european waters) along with the standard "This video was deleted" audio message. Here's the trashed vid in question. Disable the comments as they were meant for the original vid.

I find it amusing how around New Years' a lot of older videos resurfaced on the daily mylist rankings. I was happy to see the legendary Princess Tutu AMV, Håll Om Mig, up there. It really makes you want to watch the show... Actually, it kind of makes me smile to see foreign-made AMVs become popular on sites like niconico (I think it's safe to say Candy Pop made it into the side-annals of niconico history) - it reminds you that some things, like enjoying great AMVs, are the same no matter where you come from.
