I saw it doesn't start until August. That's pretty late for a summer show, right? So I take it it's not a full 12 episode season?

It's late, and very uncommon. In recent years, I think only Crunchyroll/Netflix originals and Attack on Titan have done that.

Definitely watch a few early episodes of KR W first at the very least.

I'm watching KR W for the first time in preparation for this anime (currently at episode 18), the tonal difference between what's in the trailer and what's in the TV show is funny. It seems they've removed all the goofiness.

Also I knew this was going to happen but I'm really going to miss Sonozaki family they're the highlight of the show so far for me.

The manga is serialized in a Seinen (Japanese term for young man, basically 18+) magazine, so yes, it's darker and more violent than the tv series. It's closer to the V-Cinema in my opinion. The manga is written by Riku Sanjo himself so aesthetically, it's very faithful to the OG series.

One thing i'm glad for W is that the movies are canon. Most KR movies are not canon or timeline wise doesn't fit in anywhere. W doesn't have this issue.
So this made the story more easier to follow.

A fan was at the screening at Anime Expo and answered some questions about the first two episodes.

W and the Dopants are traditionally animated. Only the bike and the driver are CG.
