Boy, the ability of Netflix to kill English discussion of any new show no matter how much buzz it has is truly remarkable.

So yeah I'm not sure how I feel about Komi yet. It took me a few tries to really get into the manga though and Rumiko and the second year cast really elevated it beyond gag manga so I'm mixed about revisiting the early chapters again. Sucks that its stuck in Netflix jail though.

Man, the quality of the animation feels through the roof D0=! Definitely one of the prettier anime this season. Pretty much enjoyed the episode from start to finish. The only thing that was lacking was the blackboard lines. I remember in the scanlated manga, all the lines were translated; it was pretty heartwarming for me, but the lack of translation in the anime feels like I missing out on something(which it did; its a whole conversation between them).
Spoiler for scanlated pg from manga:

At the very least, I'm SO glad that they're FINALLY implementing a weekly schedule for the current anime shows(at least for BP and this, which is what i'm watching), so viewers have a chance to digest what they've watched. There has been a least a few shows that dropped the whole season that killed tons of potential discussion, and I absolutely hated that.

That was a terrific premier! The production values are amazing and they're really adapting and expanding on the material perfectly .

I love how Aoi Koga's Komi is just her making breathing sounds and surprised noises. "Aoi Koga noises" were a thing and now that's embodied by Komi. Even when we actually hear Komi's voice, the deliver and sound is believable of someone who really doesn't talk that much .

The chalkboard writing scene being completely silent was perfect .

I guess my only issue is Netflix's subs where there's a lot they leave unsubbed and sometimes they're slow or don't flow quick enough...would've been nice if they had translated more of the chalkboard writing .

The Opening is really fun, catchy, and atmospheric showcase of Komi, Tadano, and the rest of the gang .

Man, showing off all the other eccentric characters makes this look like a school battle anime, but I'm glad they fit that moment there .

Anime is saved! Or at least this Anime's time budget looks like it was saved because those shots looked stunning! We're really getting a AAA production for this. And I really feel like Aoi Koga was indeed the perfect casting for this. If there's one recent actress that's been great at acting through simple grunts was her.

They really got the perfect VA for Najimi. Absolutely perfect voice to leave you wondering boy or girl.

Poor Tadano thought it'd be easy for Komi to make friends not knowing how obsessive the class is over her and how they all hate his guts .

We finally meet Najimi Osana, Or Osana Najimi, or just straight up Osanajimi because that's basically they're entire gimmick of being childhood friends with or just plain friends with practically everybody. Where Komi can't communicate, Najimi can fit in anywhere. Najimi even jumps into whatever gender they feel like, and Rie Murakawa does a surprisingly great job capturing that vocally .

Najimi is also a giant tease, especially when it comes to Tadano. Childhood friends are fun until you realize they remember your dark history and know enough about you to mess with you immensely .

Although even Najimi is intimidated by Komi as the one person they weren't able to make friends with, not understanding how difficult it is for Komi to interact with or react to people. Social anxiety is a killer. At the same time though, Najimi seems to understand Komi in the end .

I guess props to that guy for willing to get together with Najimi even if Najimi was a boy, although he should learn that no means no. But thankfully Komi is there for a hilarious misunderstanding that sends him packing :innoncent:.

Najimi basically puts Komi directly in the line of fire by having her go to anime Starbucks to get them an absurd drink...and poor Komi goes through with it. Dude at the counter thought he was so proficient that he could give her what she wants and she ends up with the wrong drink. Nice try though, for the both of them .

The Ending is really cute, showing middle-school Komi and Tadano (?) in their school days. Almost like they're walking towards each other in high school .

One thing I liked is how Netflix managed to avoid pronouns entirely with Najimi. Rather than using "he", "she" or "they", any of which may have gotten a rise out of someone, they just adjusted their sentences so that pronouns were pretty much nonexistent where that one was concerned. Kind of clever really. And kind of fitting. "They" is kind of explicitly "no gender" or "unknown gender", not to mention plural. In Japanese, the pronouns "aitsu" and "koitsu" are very common and completely non-gendered. It's one of the difficulties in translating from Japanese to English: a Japanese conversation can go for a long time with no mention of a person's gender or indication that anyone is aware or unaware of said gender. As such, someone could talk about Najimi for any length of time without any indication of what gender said person has or doesn't have. Can't do that so well in English, so really just avoiding pronouns altogether is possibly the best possible solution.

Hard to guess what s/he really is. I would bet boy, and s/he kinda sounds like one, plus the way s/he looked when s/he was younger, but then again that could just be a tomboy phase. Then again, s/he does a lot of feminine stuff, outside the obvious "I'm gonna act girly to make myself more ambiguous" stuff, so its hard to tell.

Did they ever figure out what Hideyoshi was? Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm curious....

Hideyoshi is and always was a guy. He's a typ-2 trap. For reference, I define traps in 3 types. Type 1 is "Ha! You had no clue I'm actually a dude!", type 2 is "I keep telling you I'm a dude!" and type 3 is "Go ahead, take a guess." Obviously Najimi is type 3.

Hideyoshi not being a guy kind of defeats the point of the joke and the existence of his sister .

Hideyoshi always was a guy. It was just a running gag that he got mistaken for a girl.
On the other hand the nobody knows whether Najimi is a boy or a girl (except maybe Najimi). Najimi is Schrödingender.

Najimi is whatever gender Najimi needs to be (or feels like) .

You guys are all wrong. Hideyoshi's gender is Hideyoshi. That was clearly defined in the series.
