I've not really read enough of this series to say how it compares longer term but it has slightly reminded me of it. I'd say this series is more "shonen" to Spice and Wolf's "seinen" - it's more action orientated and the banter is less subtle and more straightforward.

Episode 2:
Haha, Mercenery got called being an old guy by that Albus kid. Priceless. It's too bad witches are treated like monsters (like Sorena) during the past and probably still in the present. The misunderstandings are unreal.... Seriously though, they need to fix their world. On the other hand, I continuously find the character chemistry between Zero and Mercenery to be cute with their little moments.

Ep 2 was nice done, I thought. Enjoying this so far, which is nice.
I don't want to make too many comparisons to the original LN but from the pacing they're going for I get the feeling that they're going to expand the first LN into one cour. If that's the case then I think they're going about it in a nice way - properly laying the groundwork and background detail in a natural way. It also makes it more worthwhile to watch the anime because they're adding a number of original touches that compliment the story. |

Episode 2 was really good, sad at the same time because it shows how the Humans do things that can leave deep scars on people's heart just because of their ignorace.
The pacing is quite good, leaving a nice amount of time to completely understand what is going on and the impact of certain scenes. I agree with @Kari about the first volume, maybe they have planned more than 1 season? who knows. Another great detail of this adaptation is how we can appreciate the chemistry between Zero and the Mercernary, how little by little they're getting closer and trust each other even more. That ED is always perfect to end each episode, truly one of the best this season. And here an image from a series that can summarize what happened this episode. Spoiler for Young Pope:

I'd say it's more about jumping to conclusions, but yes there's part of that as well - hating the "other". In this episode, the ring serves as a metaphor for what happened to Sorena - something bad happens, people jump at the first plausible explanation, lynch mob forms. In Sorena's case this initial misunderstanding leads to an extreme counter-attack and the situation descends even further. (Reminds me of how events can unfold in some Gundam series and more...)

You look pale mercenary. That is just my fur
A really nice and sad episode. How jumping to conclusions leads to death of a good witch. Is nice to see mercenary how he is changing his point of view. Also , I like Zero, she is really cute. |

I couldn't find Mercenary's official age but he is over 2m tall.
In ep1 we see a flashback to when he killed some bandits. At the time he was 13 years old. He clearly looks older now but I've no idea how much time passed since then. He feels somewhat mature in his attitude but not particularly mature - somewhere in his 20s sounds about right. |
