Will say that I do love the classic Star Wars theme. That is just great .

But not much to say on the teaser. The title already told us the force was "awakening." The light saber with the light guards is cool, but will have to see it in action. Otherwise, I can't really comment.

The movie is coming, that's about all we know.

I am... withholding judgment. I see some good in there and some bad. This is going to be a long wait to this time next year.

I lost it at the comment in 2ch "why is that chick riding a gigantic thumb drive?"

I thought it was some sort of mobile vending stand. Ice cream cart on Tatooine?

This looks interesting.
Hopefully, JJ Abrams will do justice to the Star Wars franchise. I, for one, enjoyed his Star Trek movies, so if he can pull that off with Star Wars, this new trilogy might be good.

I will, however, remain skeptical until we see more.

I wonder how advanced of camera and computer technology they will use for this trilogy. The last two sets have introduced a lot of tech to the industry.

Spoiler for image:
That's assuming that the opponent will always hit the base and that the base is easily destroyed (the latter of which may be true).

EDIT: Of course, it may still be a cause of self-inflicted injury, so that would still make it a bad design. Then again, these are magical swordsmen. That person probably knew the risks involved and had been trained to use it. It also may prevent just anybody from using it.

If the hilt is made from Cortosis than the user would want the opponent's blade to hit there as it would short out the opponent's blade for a little bit and give the dark sider an advantage.

Whoever this is, he's either really stupid or really skilled. In a way, that lightsabre is even more difficult than Darth Maul's, but if mastered...

Okay, how about this theory :

What if the crossguard of that new lightsaber wasn't meant for defense... What if instead it was meant as a way to vent off the immense energy inside the hilt.

So basically, when the crossguard is laser lighted, that Sith (Dark Hooded figure) is basically using his lightsaber at a regular power output. But let's say that Sith needs a longer or more powerful blade, then you would see the lasers on the crossguard disappear and a longer or more powerful blade would appear.

Or it could be the contrary, while the crossguard is laser lighted, that Sith has access to a longer & more powerful blade. I mean, the blade looks already quite long as it is. Basically, he could use that mode to slay bigger and perhaps slower things more easily... like say a giant monster or an AT-AT.

Then, when facing others lightsaber wielders, he could go back to a duel mode on his lightsaber. Basically, the laser lighted crossguard disappears and the laser blade goes standard size, which then allows him to do moves and parries that would otherwise be dangerous for his own hands while the crossguard is laser lighted.

So that's my theory.

How about, "when you need to cut some meat, set mode to 'hilt-only'"?

Putting aside practicality, it just doesn't look that cool to me Unless it can extend or something, it's just doesn't have the impact of a "Surprise! Here's something cool!"

But I'll eat my words if they could pull off great fight scenes with it.

I think it would look worse if it extends even longer than it has.

It probably would, that's why I concluded that the entire concept doesn't look cool lol.

We can't really see the end of the blade in the frame. It already looks longer than the average lightsaber's four or so foot long blade.

you'd typically hit the base after locking blades or just striking the opponent's blade and sliding downwards.

that's cool, but then it's the laser part that makes no sense!

That would make the whole package smaller so it wouldn't be poking him in the back all the time, Also lighter since there would be less metal. Figure he he probably carying it on over his right thigh, or even slightl higher near the side. That's mostly just from seeing where his hand moved to grab and thrust it out like that.

The guards would help prevent the other saber from sliding down and cutting his hands off, or maybe even slipping a knick out of his shoulder, like Dooku did to Obi-wan in Attack of the Clones.

Or if they lock blades, he could try to twist his around so the guards cut off his opponents hands.

Or it could just be something weird this Dark Sider likes.

the lightsaber "edges" do not seem very stable
they fluctuate
this, coupled with the new sound effect seems to suggest that his lightsaber is less refined and more wild.... carnal..
