The film is supposed to be about the original crew when they first began their careers. So we'll be seeing different people play Kirk, Spock, McCoy, etc.

With all this talk of the film, I'm expecting all the characters to be in Starfleet Academy at the same time!
I do hope that's not the case and it's only Kirk's time in the Academy that is highlighted.

I'm a really big Star Trek fan. And the original series was always my favorite. That being said, I have mixed feelings about this new film. Hopefully it's at least decent. Definitely looks "action packed", but that doesn't necessarily mean a good film of course...and there hasn't been a good one in this series since First Contact in 1996...

I am a fan of the next generation, and this one has Cap. Kirk :S....and I don't like the actors they chose, but I will still watch it .

Not getting great vibes from the plot line synopses I've seen so far .... not getting the feeling they're going to do any better with "continuity" than the B&B twits did....

Also not getting the feeling the story writers have a clue about 'suspension of disbelief' but at least it appears they're using the Romulans semi-properly for the time period (still wondering where the Vegan Tyranny went.....).

Question I've been asking for 20+ years. Just how f***ing hard is it to hire some fans as continuity advisors? Or are the egos in these things too testicularly huge? (that's so NOT a word but ought to be )

I always suspect that the average IQ of people working in entertainment industry is under 100, and they like to cater to people with below average intellect as those who are smart are very likely be able to spot various flaws that is forced into these things in order to build up to one or two spectacular scenes. The fans of Star Trek, especially of original series, constitutes rather unique group where you can count various academic elites among the casual viewers, thus very likely to be thorn in paws of producers and executives of entertainment industries, so I suspect that they want the Star Trek name without the core 'smart' fans in order to increase their short term revenue.

Having said all that negative things, I do have to point out that this movie is something like half a year away, where a lot might happen to make it even dummer, but it also is enough time for a small miracle to happen and make things OK. I hope they reduce the emotion level of Mr. Spock, cut out some 'hot' scenes, pay some smart people to check for continuity, and film/edit it with a very deep, coherent, good plot and scripts. Judging from how entertainment venues continue to go down the slope of stupidity, I shouldn't even try to hope, but hey, it's Star Trek, and mere existence of this series may be considered a miracle, as who in the 60s could have hoped for commercial success of a show that challenges social stigma like racism and gender issues while proposing a socialistic, perhaps communistic society free from capitalistic ideal of building up one's wealth?

P.S. hey Mr. Vexx. Are we showing out age by being enthusiastic and critical of the newest Star Trek Movie? Also I wonder if the Republican party is run by Ferengis, or is that a insult to the Ferengis?

Well... we're showing we're aware of the history of the franchise. When ST hit the airwaves in 1967 - it was probably the most unusual challenging thing on the air. Using modern demographics, it was much more of a hit than the simplistic rating tools of the time implied (aka, all the *right* people in the highest spending categories were watching it).

I like the idea of a reboot and even with a bit of re-interpretation of the characters -- after all, there have been several Dr. Whos and many Sherlock Holmes and more than one Captain Ahab. Don't re-invent the characters though (i.e. change their basic personalities).

I just hope they stick to some fantasy-physics continuity (don't change the rules to suit some stupid plot idea), leave the Vulcans non-emotional, and return to the pre-f*ckup timeline.

I'd heard some plot kernel bits that I'm not fond of mostly because they strain credulity of the social and professional framework in any setting.

Yeah I don't know what was up with Uhura taking her shirt off...it's a cool thing don't get me wrong, but Star Trek isn't all about "sex appeal" all the time...this film just reminds me of the attempt to redo "Lost in Space" a few years ago.

ouch... kiss of death to mention the lame series that one tv network went for when it rejected Star Trek back in the 60s.

Update: ok, watched the latest trailer...... yeah, this might be good. and being a long time Uhura fan - I might okay with that little racy scene. Original Star Trek certainly had its share of skin in the 60s (re: Uhura's parallel universe garb, the usual bevy of Kirk targets-of-opportunity).

Not certain what I think of Spock's portrayer ..... I'm just used to the much deeper voice that Nimoy projected. Nimoy really has a marvelous voice derived from his Shakespearean days (much like Patrick Stewart).

I'm kind of pulling back and forth on if I'll go see this. THe only Star Trek series I'd ever watched on a regular basis were Next Generation and Voyager. As for movies I've actually liked a good amount of them, but most of the new ones, besides Generations and First Contact I've despised, so I'm not to sure this one will break that track record.

Chris Pine (who's he?) as Captain Kirk, not sure about that. Zachary Quinto I did see before in Heroes, he could make a good Spock.

I'm not a huge sci-fi fan, never have been and never will be, let alone towards Star Trek, but when I saw the trailer for this at the cinema a few weeks ago I actually think that it looks pretty cool and will more than likely end up going to see it with my boyfriend when it comes out, who really wants to see it himself anyway

Recent trailers have convinced me to go see this. What really got me interested was the involvement of J.J. Abrams. Being the huge LOST fanatic I am and the fact I've loved just about everything he has worked on I'm quite excited about how this movie will turn out.

There is a prequel comic for the new movie, called Countdown - released by IDW over the last couple of months, and as a trade paperback last week.


It gives an interesting glimpse at some of the events which will play a factor in the movie, though there are one or two of those which I personally don't care for one bit.


Still, it's worth checking out, if you are interested.
