When I used a Mac (back when I lived in China and had to use my school's comps), I tried Ircle and quickly got really sick of it. I then tried that Unix-utils-for-Mac project thing whose name escapes me at the moment, installed Irssi and never looked back. Irssi is however not really for the faint of heart, console-based as it is... It's a very competent IRC client, nevertheless.

That would probably DarwinPorts -- www.darwinports.org
I'd recommend installing this if you want to use some Unix
software on the Mac, as it makes installing such software
a breeze. I installed wget on my Mac mini by just typing
"sudo port install wget"...

Anyway... I never tried it myself, but Snak is afaik the most
mature IRC client (with a GUI) on the Mac...

No, that wasn't it. After searching my swiss-cheesed memory, I recall that it was actually Fink ( http://fink.sourceforge.net/ ), but since I haven't tested DarwinPorts, I have no idea how the two compare against each other...

My favorite OS X IRC client is Colloquy. Not sure how good it is at the whole bot thing though. It does DCC, but it doesn't have some of the fancier DCC options that mIRC has. It is, however, based on irssi at its core (just has a nice GUI over top). Give it a shot, see how it works out for you.

I just switched to Mac (MacBook Pro).

The three main anime-related problems I've encountered are:

1) BT client.

2) IRC client.

3) Playback software.

Since you're on a G4, you have a PowerPC chip, and so I can recommend the following:

1) Azereus for BT.

2) X-Chat Aqua for IRC.

3) Quicktime/VLC (anime playback is always hard with a Mac).

Your question regards IRC specifically, and the one I use (despite having to emulate because of my intel chip) is X-Chat Aqua.

I've been more worried about an Intel binary, but I think Tomato has its universal version out now.

Bits on Wheels is a great OS X client, though still being worked on. Azureus is the best if you need transport encryption to BitTorrent (i.e. you're on a packet-shaped network like that found on a typical college campus).

As for playback, I don't see what's hard about playing back anime on VLC. Always seems to work for me. For the few times I get very bizarre MKV files, I have mplayer around as a backup. And QuickTime's not bad once you have the DivX and Flip4Mac components.

Of course, the Intel business makes that a little complicated. At the moment you have to launch QuickTime in Rosetta mode in order to watch WMV (since the Flip4Mac component isn't yet Universal). This is why I'm not getting an Intel Mac until early next year when all these sorts of little niggling issues have been taken care of (and CS3 is out... and Leopard is out... etc.)

Can anyone please suggest me a free IRC client. I'm an intermediate user, so I know my way around the IRC network. I'm looking for something fast and user friendly.

If you say "suggest" I would probably say irassi, but then I don't know what "features" you want from an IRC client. Reading Wikipedia's Comparison of IRC clients is probably your best bet for a broad range of information.

mIRC, with its ancient, outdated, hacky codebase, is NOT the client to recommend to people. At least recommend something that supports Unicode, for Christ's sake.

mirc6.17+ supports unicode.

irssi > *, especially if you like to tweak things. The client is crazily customizeable (take a look at this theme for example...). An added plus is that it can be remote-controlled over SSH, which can be pretty convenient. Unfortunately, like many power tools, it can be rather hard to get used to... and it doesn't have a GUI.
