Episode 1:
Well...now that was one hell of an episode. This episode so far is my favorite out of any show that aired from Fall season at the moment. 47+ minutes of godly animated Kyoto Animation quality. The chemistry between Reina and Kumiko is very charming. They also introduced a new guy (kinda feels like he has the sort of opposite personality compared to Taki). In the meantime, I'm pretty happy at how they gave all the main characters some moment. Obviously, Reina and Kumiko got the most screen time. Good start, I'm guessing this season will take competition into a more serious direction? They got the Nationals coming and all. Anyways, very interested in the upcoming episodes.

Incredibly good animation, damn those backgrounds were amazing, on top of that the music as always is a nice addition that makes this really good. The OP is catchy and well done (as expected from this series).
Glad to see Kumiko again, missed her a lot and how she's always looking for everyone, Reina looks somewhat more serious than before.. Anyway, let's see how this is going for the rest of the season. @BBOvenGuy Yep, almost 50 minutes. Last edited by Kotohono; 2016-10-17 at 23:48. |

Ain't that Kuroo's seiyuu? Hmmm, doing characters from Kansai and Kanto this season, eh.
Hmm, as for the episode itself, well, even with animation slightly below KyoAni's standards, it still looks like an eye-candy, so not much to say. Reina and Kumiko sound different... they changed their voices a bit since the movie, I guess. |

just kiss already dammit
i wasn't expecting a double episode so i was pleasently surprised. the episode was pretty good, i liked nozomi, i'm interested in knowing more about what happened the year before. i wonder how can she make the oboist feel sick just listening to her flute, that kinda extrem. i wonder also what make kumiko's onee-chan quit playing, did they ever told us that in s1 ? opening and ending seem good, usually when a s2 air i dislike the op/ed at first then love them afterward, this time i can't say i love them immediatly but at least i don't dislike them. |

good episode.
nice to see we're going deeper into the drama that happened. The oboist feeling sick from hearing the flute, it must have been a very heated ordeal. Voices seem a bit different across the board on a lot of characters, maybe a bit more mature, not sure. ouch, Shuichi has a hard road in front of him Kumiko really has no awareness or thoughts about his existance, even Reina was surprised at how indifferent she is to him.

Great way to restart the series with a double episode full of KyoAnis usual eye candy. Not the most impressive I've seen from them but nowhere near the worst. The double episode flew by with me barely noticing the time which just shows how enthralled I was in th episode. Now onwards for more "adolescence"

This was a very strong (double) episode. Visual quality aside, that was a given, I liked how it was able to give depth to all the active characters. Now I'm curious to know what happened to cause such a lasting aftermath. Asuka sempai is strong as usual, while I found Kumiko and Reina a bit different from what I remembered. Especially kumiko felt more mature and self confident while still slightly unfocused/detached (the VA kinda felt slightly off at times, maybe in the try to express/get tuned to this mood).
So I'll have my work to do to put all the faces together, there are a lot of characters. Poor Shuichi

I wonder what that snowy scene in the beginning was about.
Man, if even just hearing the sound of her (former?) friend playing is enough to make her feel sick, whatever happened last year must have been far worse than I'd thought. Quote:

Wasn't expecting a double episode, but I'm not complaining. It was a nice treat.
It wasn't hard to get back into the show and they presented a few new plot threads that should keep things interesting. I guess things haven't changed regarding the way Shuichi is treated.

Welcome back everyone! Here's hoping the discussion doesn't become as painful and exasperating to read as the previous one. The show deserves better of its fans.
The double episode was a pleasant surprise! I was able to finish it on my daily walk\jog. Kumiko and Reina definitely sound different this time around, especially the former. She has such a distinctive voice that attracted me since the beginning, and it's emphasized even more in the narration and dialogue. I know a blogger remarked that they sounded different in the movies too. Quote:
Asuka's as two-faced and mysterious as ever, although I don't blame her for not wanting Nozomi to rejoin. Reina brought up some good points about it as well. Although the part about refusing to run away from difficulties is certainly not "normal"; that's part of what makes someone like her special. But people can and do change; the issue here is that it might be too late and it shouldn't jeopardize their chances at the Kansai competition. |

They've gone so far with Kumiko and Reina that frankly it's a crime to the story so far to not just go all the way with it.

Oh my freakin god, I'm about to drown in all the drama and tension! And we got 50 minutes of it! good lord.
I'm so glad this show's back. I missed them all, especially Asuka and Natsuki. I also can't forget about Kumiko and Reina. Man, oh man. The realest dialog of the real this season. The new characters are also pretty interesting as well since they are new many links that give us insight as to what happened last year. Can't believe Yoroizuka was feeling nauseous because of Nozomi's flute playing. |

Well, I just spent a couple hours watching the 1st episode of season 2, and then re-reading a bunch of comments in the 1st season's thread (mostly about what's-his-name).
If this had been the very first episode of Hibike! Euphonium that I had ever watched, I don't think I'd bother to watch another. Whereas I was captivated by Kumiko's character from the very start of season 1, she seemed like a different character from the beginning of this episode. Dull, boring, lifeless. It even seemed as if she had a different VA. I'd also be wondering why the anime sites don't have this showed tagged as "yuri." But, having stuck around for the whole of the 1st season, I feel compelled to follow this season, as well, even though this episode did not have that same charm that the 1st episode of season 1 had for me. And, if Kyoani expects to produce a third season (or should I say, even if there's a third season?), I doubt we will see much change there, although I personally would like to know about their relationship as childhood friends. |

I liked this double-sized 1st episode, but I get where Fred is coming from, at least to a point.
This feels different to me. Not better or worst, just different. Hibike Season 1 typically struck me as intense, playful, theatrical, and at-times really over-the-top. Kumiko often seemed amusingly frenzied, Taki seemed like a smooth badass, and Reina seemed like a very quirky eccentric girl often channeling Akemi Homura. Hibike Season 2 Episode 1 struck me as methodical, serious, subtle, and much more down-to-Earth. Kumiko and Reina and Taki all seem much more down-to-Earth and relaxed and practical to me here. I guess this makes sense to a degree, with these major characters having grown more comfortable in each others' presence simply due to growing familiarity. Still, Taki seems so much more laidback than I remember him being in Hibike Season 1. Kumiko and Reina's interactions have gone from making me think "sparkling energy drinks while excitedly swimming in the sparkling poll on a sparkling day" to "listening to a mixture of relaxing Jazz and classical music while watching lava lamps flow slowly against the backdrop of a softly glowing sunset". Neither is bad, but they're way different from each other. This 1st episode was atmospheric and relaxing and SoL-like to a degree that almost makes me think of Aria, really. That being said, the new characters bring with them some color and drama, and maybe the more established major characters are mellowed out for purposes of good contrast - The new characters and their drama stand out more this way. I like what the new characters are bringing so far, and I look forward to learning more about them and seeing how this all resolves.

In the end everyone noticed the change on the voices, I wonder if that happened because they are trying to pull some sort of serious atmosphere around the cast or is just because the VA's got a bit older.
Kumiko sounds like she's more quiet but Reina was the one who changed quite a bit this time, looking even more serious than the first season. |
